Amazon.com Review
According to Dr. Batmanghelidj, the body possesses many different thirst signals. A dry mouth is not a reliable indicator of your body's water needs. He describes a variety of more reliable ones, and helps you learn to understand when your body is calling for water. In this way, he claims you can prevent, treat, and cure a variety of conditions of ill health, at no cost, with what he calls nature's miracle medicine: Water. The author explains how much water one needs to drink a day to stay healthy, and why tea, coffee, and sodas are not good substitutes for water.

Review
"It started with a patient suffering unbearable ulcer pain one late night. The Doctor treated him with 500 cubic centimeter of water. His pain became less severe and then disappeared completely. The physician was so impressed that he prescribed two glasses of water six times a day and achieved a "clinical" cure of the ulcer attack." -- The New York Times "Science Watch"
"One man's solution to soaring health costs: water." -- Paul Harvey
"Thanks to Dr. Batmanghelidj. I put your book next to the Bible and I read them both." -- Dick Gregory
"The average American is woefully uninformed about water. Mose people think they drink enough water, but they don't. Dr. Batmanghelidj's book will created a tide of public opinion about the wonders of water." -- The Connection Newspaper
"The water principle has a convincing logic but turns much of current medical practice on its head. Does it work? You only have to turn on the tap to find out." -- The European, London, December 1995
"When Dr. Batmanghelidj thinks of a glass of water, he doesn't think of it as half full or half empty. He thinks of it as brimming over with the essential fluid of life. He thinks of it as the solvent of our ills and the deliverer of ripe old age. He thinks of it as the wave of the future." -- The Washington Times
How like 'monkey mind' to bounce about, tying itself in knots with complex solutions while ignoring the profound significance of the simple! Circumstance helped Dr. Batmanghelidj perceive the elegant significance of one factor we too often overlook: water. -- Townsend Letter for Doctors
It is claimed that fish probably have no awareness of the presence of water; this book shows we may have done little better. Mostly we have treated symptoms, and often wrongly at that, but masterpieces come into being to produce paradigm shifts. If we learn this one, we may arrest the course of our patients in their all-too-rapid going the way of all flesh. -- Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology
The following excerpt, from Chapter 2 of Your Body's Many Cries for Water, describes the vital role water plays in the healthy functioning of the human body.
The new scientific truth about the human body that will empower people to become practitioners of preventive medicine for themselves is as follows: It is the solvent the water content that regulates the activity of all the solutes (solids) that are dissolved in it. Every function of the body is monitored and pegged to the efficient flow of water. "Water distribution" is the only way of making sure that not only an adequate amount of water, but also its transported elements (hormones, chemical messengers and nutrients) reach the vital organs. In turn, every organ that produces a substance to be made available to the rest of the body will release it into the "flowing water." Adequate water intake, therefore, achieves paramount importance.
This new paradigm permits an incorporation of the "fourth dimension of time" into scientific research. It will facilitate an understanding of the damaging effect of an establishing dehydration that persists for some time. It will make it possible to forecast the physiological events that will lead to disease states in later years, including what at present appear to be genetic disorders. It will transform the present "shot-in-the-dark, symptom-treating" approach to the practice of medicine into a scientifically accurate medical art; it will make preventive forecasting possible. It will establish excellent health, and reduce health care costs to individuals and to any society that fosters its spread.
Since water shortage in different areas of the body will manifest varying symptoms, signals, and complications now labeled as diseases, people may think that water cannot be offered as a natural solution. Water curing so many diseases? No way!
Thinking thus, they shut their mind to the new possibility of preventing, even curing, so many "diseases" that are dehydration-produced. It does not occur to them that the only remedy for conditions that occur when the body begins to get dehydrated is water and nothing else. A number of sample testimonials are published in the book to open the eyes of skeptics to the fact that the greatest health discovery of all time is that water is a natural medication for a variety of health conditions. -- Excerpted from Your Body's Many Cries for Water by F.Batmanghelidj, M.D. Copyright (c) 1995 by F. About the Author
When the revolutions broke out in 1979, Dr. Batmanghelidj, as a member of a prominent family, was thrown in jail. While serving as a political prisoner in Evin prison, he discovered the healing power of water.
One night, Dr. Batmanghelidj had to treat a fellow prisoner who was suffering severe peptic ulcer pain. With no conventional medication at his disposal, Dr. Batmanghelidj gave the man, who was crippled with pain, two glasses of water. Within eight minutes, his pain disappeared. He was instructed to drink two glasses of water every three hours, and he became absolutely pain-free for the four remaining months he was in prison. Without using any medication, he was cured.
During the 31 months of his imprisonment, Dr. Batmanghelidj treated more than 3,000 peptic ulcer sufferers with water alone. He conducted extensive research during his prison stay into the medicinal effects of water, and discovered water could prevent, relieve and cure many painful degenerative diseases. He found Evin prison an "ideal stress laboratory," and chose to stay an extra four months in prison to complete his research into the relationship of dehydration, stress, and disease, despite being offered an early release. A report of his findings was smuggled out of Iran and became the editorial article in the June 1983 issue of the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, and was reported on by the New York Times Science section.
After his release from prison in 1982, Dr. Batmanghelidj escaped from Iran and came to America, where he continues his research into the role of water in the human body and the damaging effects of dehydration on human health. His studies show that, if we maintain a healthy lifestyle of drinking plenty of water on a regular basis, we will be able to enjoy good health and avoid diseases and painful conditions that require pharmaceutical drugs and expensive medical procedures.
Dr. Batmanghelidj now dedicates his time promoting public awareness of the healing power of water. His book Your Body's Many Cries for Water, has helped hundreds of thousands of people live happier, healther, lives.

About the author

"Fereydoon Batmanghelidj, M.D., an internationally renowned researcher, author and advocate of the natural healing power of water, was born in Iran in 1931. He attended Fettes College in Scotland and was a graduate of St. Mary's Hospital Medical School of London University, where he studied under Sir Alexander Fleming, who shared the Nobel Prize for the discovery of penicillin.
Dr. Batmanghelidj practiced medicine in the United Kingdom before returning to Iran where he played a key role in the development of hospitals and medical centers. He also helped establish sport projects for youth in Iran, including The Ice Palace in Tehran, the first ice skating and sports complex in the Middle East.
When the Iranian Revolution broke out in 1979, Dr. Batmanghelidj was placed in the infamous Evin Prison as a political prisoner for two years and seven months. It was there he discovered the healing powers of water. One night, Dr. B. had to treat a fellow prisoner with crippling peptic ulcer pain. With no medications at his disposal, Dr. B. gave him two glasses of water. Within eight minutes, his pain disappeared. He was instructed to drink two glasses of water every three hours and became absolutely pain free for his four remaining months in the prison. Dr. B. successfully treated 3,000 fellow prisoners suffering from stress-induced peptic ulcer disease with water alone. While in prison he conducted extensive research into the medicinal effects of water in preventing and relieving many painful degenerative diseases. Evin proved an ideal "stress laboratory," and despite his being offered an earlier release, Dr. B. chose to stay an extra four months in prison to complete his research into the relationship of dehydration and bleeding peptic ulcer disease. The report of his findings was published as the editorial of the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology in June 1983. The New York Times Science Watch reported this discovery on June 21, 1983.
On his release from prison in 1982, Dr. Batmanghelidj escaped from Iran and came to America. At the Foundation for the Simple in Medicine he began to research the effect of chronic unintentional dehydration on the human body. His findings were published in the Foundation's "Journal of Science in Medicine Simplified" in 1991 and 1992. They can be read on the web site www.watercure.com.
Dr. F. Batmaghelidj wrote his first self-help book "Your Body's Many Cries for Water" in 1992, in which he stated that a dry mouth is not a reliable indicator of dehydration. The body signals its water shortage by producing pain. Dehydration actually produces pain and many degenerative diseases, including asthma, arthritis, hypertension, angina, adult-onset diabetes, lupus and multiple sclerosis. Dr. B's message to the world is, "You are not sick, you are thirsty. Don't treat thirst with medication."
Dr. F. Batmanghelidj devoted the last 20 years of his life promoting public awareness of the healing powers of water. He appeared on hundreds of radio and television programs and lectured around the world. He has left a body of valuable works of six books and more than a dozen educational audio and video seminars. His work has created an international community that has embraced the natural healing of the water cure. His ground-breaking book "Your Body's Many Cries for Water" has been translated into 15 languages and continues to inspire readers all over the world.
Dr. F. Batmanghelidj died of complications from pneumonia on November 15, 2004, in Virginia, U.S.A. He was 73."

I bought it because I was interested in the whole subject of possible dehydration.
However, I don't think I buy all of its assertions.
It may well be, that many people, like myself who consume too much caffeine are dehydrated.
I learned a valuable lesson about making sure that most of my liquid intake, in future, will come from water, plain and simple.
However, once I gave up caffeine, I found that I stopped "losing water," for want of a better expression, very quickly and where, once, I was in and out of the loo every 10 minutes, or so, now I can go hours without needing to go..
I buy into the idea of keeping my drinking before and in between meals.
However, I'm more convinced by other articles and books which claim that, tea/coffee/alcohol/caffeinated beverages and their diuretic effects aside, a good portion of the water we need to consume actually comes from food, of all types and that, provided we avoid the diuretic drinks as much as possible, while still allowing for the odd social drink, or brew, from time to time, that we don't need to be downing 8+ glasses of water everyday in order to stay hydrated, or reap all of the other "benefits," touted by the author, should we choose to drink that much.
And, I have a bit of a gnawing doubt that, that amount of water is necessary for human beings, or any other animal to consume..
Supporters of Macrobiotics, which I think has its own flaws will argue that we should ONLY drink when thirsty and that we should only sip liquids, if need be, during meals.
I'd go along with that notion, particularly given that various groups of human beings have survived, even thrived, on very little water, for millenia.
I'm not aware of various hunter/gatherer groups gulping down 8 glasses, or anything close, of water a day and they seem to do OK.
That applies to those who live in desert conditions, or in the extreme Arctic.
Furthermore, if we look around the animal kingdom at animals, particularly, our closest relatives in the primate world and see what their water intake is like, I'd wonder if it even approaches that recommended by the author, although, again, I'm sure they get their intake from a variety of sources..
I'm trying to remember if I ever saw my dog get through more than a bowl, if that, of water every day..
I think she drank whenever she was thirsty and I still wonder if we couldn't learn a thing, or 3, from the natural instincts of other animal species.
That said, I've increased my water intake, but certainly not to the amount recommended by the author and I'm trying to keep it away from meals and I'm sipping it..gently :O)
Everyone who is interested in their own health and the health of their family should purchase a copy of this book. It is a must-read to replace the medicine chest of pharmaceuticals.
That said, after reading the book I proved for myself the validity of Dr Batmanghelidj's water cure, and stopped 50 years of progressively serious to life-threatening stomach ulcers. I now continue drinking between 2 to 2.5 litres of water daily. Although I do recognise that some people 'need' to drink more water than others. Nor all humans are made the same.
