"Dana Kaye doesn't just come up with unique, out-of-the-box PR campaigns, she has the ability to execute them...[O]ne of the best publicists in the business."
― James Rollins, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author
"There's a reason I didn't hire an outside publicist through my first ten books. It's because I hadn't yet met Dana. Smart, no-nonsense, creative, and to the point, she's the best in the business. And you lucky readers get to hire her for only $16.99."
― Gregg Hurwitz, New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author of Orphan X
"I wholeheartedly recommend Dana Kaye's Your Book, Your Brand. In the years I've known and worked with Dana, her ideas and strategies have been pragmatic, effective and cost efficient. I count her as an amazing and essential resource for my clients and the agency. I plan to buy this book by the carton and distribute it not just to clients but to my writer friends as well."
― Janet Reid, Agent at Fine Print Literary

― Liz Climo, Author and Illustrator of Lobster is the Best Medicine and Rory the Dinosaur

After I read her "Branding" chapter, I purchased a domain and decided to commit to a self-hosted site. I migrated my blog content from a free wordpress.com site, and got to work on my brand strategy. Kaye offers many insights on branding and marketing. She also discusses author sites and outlines several strategies to improve readership. One of her central points is to stick to your author brand:
"If you're having trouble [drafting on-brand content], start by using some of these prompts: Where does your book take place? What themes are covered in your book? ... What research did you conduct to write your book? What current events relate to the themes and topics in your book? .... Continue listing topics and types of content you could post about until you have a list of 15-20. Now, go through and highlight the topics that meet the following criteria: 1. Topic relates to your author brand 2. Topic appeals to your target audience" (37)
As you can see from the excerpt above, Kaye's advice is straightforward and practical. Although her book is for authors with finished books, her advice is useful for writers in media res. For me, I read the chapters that are currently applicable to my work ("Branding," "Social Media," etc.). I will go back and read certain chapters once my book is ready to launch. I highly recommend Your Book, Your Brand to anyone looking to promote their book and author brand.
(In the interest of full disclosure, I am not currently an Amazon affiliate. I purchased this book and was not asked to review this book by the author or Amazon.)
Step by step, in clear, accessible language, Dana Kaye generously shares the knowledge she's gleaned from her many years as a book publicist giving clear direction on how anyone, with perseverance and determination, can do for themselves what she has been doing professionally for others over many years.
Easy to read, focused and a true manual to be referred back to again and again.
