Are you an author? Are you writing poems or your memoir? Well, why don't you have this? Do you want to be published or are you one of those that say to an author after they just gave a talk, "I have this great idea for a book." You know who you are. I would like to bean you over the head every time I hear that line. Then shove a copy of this book at you and grin.
Get it. What are you waiting for? Do you need a book-writing book that actually works?
Well, hit the go button and get going...
Honestly. See you on the bestsellers list.
Writing a book is a lot more than collecting 300 pages of relatively continuous material. If you've never written a book before, even if you are a devoted reader, the process of writing a book is a skill that bears learning. It is also the kind of skill that can be debilitating to continue learning, learned as it is while you face your own writing demons. "Your Book Starts Here" breaks down the huge, complicated process of book-writing into small, bite-sized pieces with Moore's characteristic tone of support and encouragement. Moore's well-considered process of instruction, gleaned from years of teaching workshops for writers of all levels and genres, helps you keep your sanity while taking on a massive amount of material.
Since working with Mary and the material in this book, my writing has changed radically for the better. I have also gone from being completely naive about how to write to a book to understanding what I need to do to create a book that is engaging and well-written. Working with one chapter from "Your Book Starts Here" each week, I went from having a few dry mismatched essays to a complete first draft in 12 weeks. In 24 weeks, I had a second draft, a much more nuanced understanding of the craft of writing, and an appreciation for how to manage the immense task of writing a book.
If you've never written a book before, this book is indispensable. Buy it.
Others are how to's- pick one of these twenty plots, add in a dash of location, stir. and voila - a book.
The book by Mary Caroll Moore includes the best of both of the above, but is much more. It really opens up how to organize your ideas, how to deal with the sagging story line, or how to bolster and fix the section that just doesn't seem to work. At the same time it inspires making your book something more, raising its literary level above a simple plot driven narrative. I am sure I am going to finish my book now, using this to guide me through the rough spots.
I am very pleased that I bought it and I recommend it highly to anyone who seriously wants to write their first book. ( or a better second one.)
