The strongest parts of the book, for me, are when Tyler centers on his family. It adds a pleasant depth to the narrative - and gives us some insight into what led the author into his misadventures in the ATL.
Is this a perfect collection? Not at all. As a first book, it is an admirable foray into the life and times of a small town gay guy who moves to the "Big City" of Atlanta (ironically, a city once described as a small town's idea of a big city). When one considers that these were originally blog entries, the author's voice emerges as particularly clear. I wished for a stronger editing hand at times to tie the collection into a more cohesive whole. But as a book that I read on my subway commute, I burst out laughing at several moments - what more could one want? "Your boyfriend and other guys I've kissed" brings us into Tyler's world - and it's one I'd like to return to. Even if I refrain from introducing him to MY boyfriend.
And please Tyler...more !!!!
this book had me both laughing and getting teary eyed, and brought back many memories of some of my old dating experiences.
*sigh* ... i have a crush on you, tyler. and i wish i was a gay male living in NY. i'd totally take you out : ).
i'm also really liking how people are publishing their blogs into books (given they have a talent for writing, like tyler). i can go months without reading a novel sometimes, but will forever be loyal to the blogs i follow on a nearly daily basis.
