Your Consent Is Not Required: The Rise in Psychiatric Detentions, Forced Treatment, and Abusive Guardianships Hardcover – January 24, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
In fact, more law-abiding Americans today are being involuntarily committed and forcibly treated “for their own good” than at any time in history.
In the first work of investigative journalism in decades to give a comprehensive view into contemporary psychiatric incarceration and forced interventions, Your Consent Is Not Required exposes how rising numbers of people from many walks of life are being subjected against their will to surveillance, indefinite detention, and powerful tranquilizing drugs, restraints, seclusion, and electroshock.
There’s a common misconception that, due to asylum closures, only “dangerous” people get committed now. But forced psychiatric interventions today occur in thousands of public and private hospitals, and also in group and long-term care facilities, troubled-teen and residential treatment centers, and even in people’s own homes under outpatient commitment orders. Intended to “help,” for many people the experiences are terrifying, traumatizing, and permanently damaging.
Driven partly by individuals’ genuine concerns for the “mental health” of others, and partly by institutions entangled with goals of power, profit, and social control, psychiatric coercion is increasingly used to:
- manage school children and the elderly
- quell family conflicts
- police the streets
- control people in shelters, community living, and prisons
- fraudulently increase hospital profits
- “resolve” workplace disagreements
- detain protesters and discredit whistleblowers
Thoroughly researched, with alarming true stories and hard data from the US and Canada, Rob Wipond’s Your Consent Is Not Required builds an unassailable case for greater transparency, vigilance, and change.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2024Format: HardcoverVerified Purchase”Your Consent Is Not Required” is a Brilliant book. Rob Wipond wrote in a very clear and easy way to read, engaging manner.
I believe it is a Great, Great, Great book for the professional or lay person alike.
If you have the diagnosis or don't understand what being forced into a psych unit is like, I strongly recommend and suggest this book.
Rob Wipond is an investigative journalist who writes about psychiatry, civil rights, among others, and policing, surveillance and privacy, and social change. I believe he might be one of the foremost authorities in investigative journalism on this subject in the entire world, besides being one of the most caring persons; something hard to find in this day and age.
If anyone could go back in time it should be Rob Wipond of today with his book back to when forced psychiatric commitment had started, and increasingly became common. People are frightened (both those who have or have not been sent to psych units), dying, being stigmatized due to ignorance and intolerance especially during their last days and worse. It would have exponentially had helped millions of people.
One chapter into this book and my life is transformed. This book is explaining it in ways that made it so easy to take on. The writing is non-confrontational, not accusatory, absolutely reassuring, and explanatory.
I have friends of my late daughter and kids of friends who took their own lives due to mental health issues throughout the years, since I arrived in the USA thirty-eight years ago - and it is a relief to read this book. Now I took on the task of reaching their families for some of whom the death of their loved one, especially those who died when forced into a psych unit was considered not the horrific thing that it is, and made many feel ashamed to report it. This book is helpful also for those who feel helpless or have friends who feel helpless, and frightened when not much is published about people being sent forcefully to psych units. It is a must-have for every student learning - every school should have this book. Superbly done!
I think I found this book at the exact right time. After countless years, and hours of going through the memories of those who died at their best time in life, most of which having died in disgrace for no reason other than the ignorance and condemnation of most people at the time, this book opened my eyes. Instead of me just reminiscing their lives, in my opinion, this book honors them.
The price is amazing. The book is amazing. I am not kidding when I say that I am a different person now than I was when this book showed up on my doorstep. I am more ppeaceful, calm, courageous, and in control of myself when it comes to fighting for people being sent into a psych unit. This book does wonders for the mind. It explains to those who do not know how being sent to a psych unit can be devastating, and helps to have closure. I Greatly Recommend it!

- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI just finished the new book, Your Consent is Not Required, by investigative reporter, Rob Wipond. It is a comprehensive and authoritative report on unwanted psychiatric interventions in North America. It is a fabulous, albeit frightening, analysis of the myriad ways people are forced to endure unwanted psychiatric interventions, from civil commitment and forced drugging to the way employers and schools also force people, to guardianships and the surveillance of social media.
Part One is "The Expansive Reach of Psychiatric Power," including such topics as "The Catch-22 of 'Insight' " and "The Expanding Diagnostic Net."
Part Two is "Core Drivers of Civil Commitment," with such topics as "Housing Fourth and the Myth of Dwindling Hospital Beds," and "How Much is an Involuntary Patient Worth?" I am ashamed to admit I had bought into the oft-repeated pronouncements that "deinstitutionalization" resulted in far fewer inpatient beds. Wipond obliterates that myth with the meticulous research characterizing his entire book, explaining that when one considers all the different types of beds now, it is several times the per capita number of beds in the 1950s. "'[D]einstitutionalization' not only didn't 'fail'—it never really happened."
Part Three is "Mass Funnels Into Psychiatric Incarceration," including people getting scooped up when they call crisis lines that are promised to be anonymous and confidential.
Part Four is "Institutional Management, Profiteering and Political Oppression," in which he reports on guardianships, employers and the military, etc., forcing people into unwanted psychiatric interventions.
Part Five is "Science, Lies and Other Possibilities." Included in this last part is the observation that there is no evidence unwanted psychiatric intervention improves people's mental health and lots of evidence it is very harmful. Psychiatry just makes up the justification that people are glad they were forced to undergo unwanted psychiatric intervention. Such people are a miniscule percentage.
I am collaborating on a paper about how to improve patient outcomes and related topics and a major thrust is if it isn't voluntary it isn't treatment. We will be citing Your Consent is Not Required.
Your Consent is Not Required should be required reading for anyone in the mental health field.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2024Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI am so glad I read this book.
Everyone needs to know what is going on in the USA/Canada and other parts of the globe, because no one is exempt. If you think you will never end up with a coerced psychiatric evaluation/captivity, then you better hope you never experience stress, never complain at work, and never have any conflict of any sort with anyone. Psychiatric stays are being weaponized all throughout the USA and other parts of the world, and this book has a wealth of information on the topic. Some call it 'gaslighting,' some call it psychological abuse. I do not think the problem is getting better yet.
The book itself is well-researched, well-organized, and profoundly thoughtful. I would also add insightful and poignant. It is evident psychiatric hospitalizations are used in a punitive fashion, not therapeutic or even clinical. Psychiatric diagnoses are almost entirely subjective and used in a deleterious/vindictive fashion.
The treatment of those labeled with mental health 'issues' is deeply distressing and tantamount to human rights abuses/violations. The USA is in a crisis where this is becoming more common, and if something is not done stop or mitigate this, a lot more injustice will be propagated. If you care at all about this topic, mental health, or human rights in general, I recommend reading this book. Besides being well-written, it does not take long to get through. If you are on the fence at all, just get it.
For further reading, I highly recommend all books written by Dr. Joanna Moncrieff (e.g., The Bitterest of Pills and The Myth of the Chemical Cure) and The Protest Psychosis by Dr. Jonathan Metzl.

RosaLeeReviewed in Canada on July 6, 20235.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely compelling! A must read for everyone!
Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis book is absolutely astonishing and compelling! There are no words to capture the magnitude of shocking details this book covers. Everyone needs to read this book to become aware of what can happen if you (or your family members, neighbors, etc.) were to decide that you need ‘help’ from mental health professionals. Investigative Journalist Rob Wipond went to incredible lengths to very thoroughly investigate and research the many ways in which psychiatry infringes upon and violates human rights and ultimately inflicts harm and trauma. Until you or someone you know has the misfortune to interact with psychiatry, or a crisis line, for ‘help’ with difficult life circumstances you are likely not aware how easily you can be judged, erroneously labelled, detained, forcibly medicated and lose all credibility and rights. The obscene overreach and inhumanities extend into many other settings as well, including schools, workplaces, military, nursing homes and the elderly and guardianships. Thank you Rob Wipond for your dedication and hard work to bring this to light. This book is one for the ages!
MMReviewed in Canada on February 6, 20235.0 out of 5 stars Finally, someone has exposed medical fraudsters!
Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseEveryone should read this book. And if you think for a second this could never happen to you…read this book over and over again until you do understand this could happen to you.
Thank you Rob for your dedication and understanding. Your devotion has given many a voice to an unimaginable and difficult experience for so many victims of medical fraud.
