We had to know it was coming. With Jack being the single remaining Holland sibling unmarried, it's finally his turn to have his story told. Jack Holland has always been the "little Prince" of the Holland family, being the only boy and all. To his credit Jack is a genuinely good guy. Always there and ready to help. After Jack heroically saves four boys from a car accident, he's not so sure about all the attention he's getting. He doesn't want anyone to see how much he's truly struggling after the incident. When his ex-wife shows up again, he knows he needs to get away. So, when Emmaline Neal needs a date for a wedding across the country Jack's more than willing to go.

It would be an understatement to say that Emmaline Neal doesn't want to go to this wedding. Especially since it's the wedding of her ex-fiancee to the woman he cheated on her with. But she has to show she's the bigger person and completely over the whole ordeal (which she is...sort of). But if she has to go at least it's with handsome Jack Holland. When they end up sleeping together, Emmaline is ready to call it what it was (a one night stand) and move on, however Jack seems to be a little bit more persistent in pursuing things.

I didn't really know what to expect with Jack's book honestly. Kristan Higgins broke trend by having Waiting On You be about a non-Holland character. So when I learned Jack was next up, I was surprised. I was immediately interested in who would be chosen as his romantic lead. I was surprised that it was Emmaline because, to be honest, she's been a character very much in the background. She hasn't been a secondary character who's been built up a little such as Jessica Dunn (which now makes me wonder when she may get her story).

Jack Holland and Emmaline Neal get their turn in the fourth Blue Heron book.

The Good
-The writing: I will alway love Ms. Higgins’ writing style and the feeling of familiarity at visiting Manningsport, New York. There are alot of returning characters from the previous books and it feels like old home week. My very first Higgins book was The Best Man, so Manninsport is near and dear to me. I just love this little ‘verse alot.
-Solid heroine: Emmaline is the antithesis of a damsel in distress and I love her for that. Physically she’s strong, but not dainty, a woman who can handle herself and emotionally she’s self-deprecating, a little insecure but when it matters she’s smart and insightful, seeing Jack’s PTSD and helping him without making him defensive.
-A good beta hero: Jack’s prepared his whole life to help others. He’s hardwired to be a hero, but when the moment comes, he’s haunted by the one he couldn’t save. He’s the kind of guy that’s in tune with women, having been raised and surrounded by strong women all his life, but when he’s ready to settle down, he finds the one Southern fried damsel that he shouldn’t have married.
-Romance, not just sex: I love a good sex scene, but Ms. Higgins’ strength is in conveying the intimacy in love scenes in a subtle manner ( though I would have liked more of them).

The (Not that) Bad and (Mostly) Everything In Between
-Story focused on separate lives instead of their romance: I would have liked more interaction between Jack and Emmaline. Alot of time was spent setting up their past relationships and why they failed, and frankly those characters (Kevin, Naomi and Hadley) were for the most part unpleasant and I didn’t want to spend that much time with them.

I really wanted to give this book 4 stars since it is one of the better, if not the best, book in the Blue Heron series, but I just couldn't bring myself to go beyond 3--just average--because even though it's better than others in the series it still has many of the same fundamental problems that make it hard to love. Perhaps if I hadn't been a longtime reader of Kristan Higgins and known that she is much much better than The Blue Heron Series, I could have gone for the 4, but because she has so many great books this series as a whole was rather disappointing. I wish I hadn't read this series, as it's tainted my opinion of Ms. Higgins and have left me hesitant to read any additional books from an author that used to be on my favorites list.

***spoilers***

All the books in this series just have way too much filler and not enough actual plot or chemistry, and are riddled with very unlikable characters. Most of the book focuses on the back stories of Emmaline and Jack and their exes, who were both very dislikable characters - so having them take up so much book space made it hard to enjoy - I felt like I knew more about Emmaline & Kevin's and Jack & Hadley's relationships than I did about Em & Jack's. And it seemed like the author built up Kevin, Emmaline's ex, to eventually have some big revelation that he was a giant a** and end up properly apologetic - but when the "apology" scene finally comes, he is still nothing but a grade A jerk and it's difficult to reconcile the person Em claimed he was while they were together with the guy Ms. Higgins presents to the reader since they are on two opposite ends of the personality extremes. As for Jack, he's Mr.
