These are the words of Pope Francis himself, addressed to young people preparing for their First Communion. They are words of wisdom and encouragement about the patient and enduring love of Jesus, who comes to us as bread to give us his own strength.

In words a child can understand, the Pope explains that not only in the Eucharist but also in the sacraments of Baptism and Confession we meet Jesus and receive his transforming love.

On every page children and their parents will discover that Jesus is indeed their true joy!

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17 1936, is the 266th and current Pope of the Catholic Church, having been elected Bishop of Rome and absolute Sovereign of Vatican City.

Born in Buenos Aires as the son of Italian parents, Jorge Mario Bergoglio was ordained a priest in 1969. From 1973 to 1979 he was Argentina's Provincial superior of the Society of Jesus. He became Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998, and a cardinal in 2001. Following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI in February 2013, on March 13, 2013 the papal conclave elected Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who chose the papal name Francis in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi. Pope Francis is the first Jesuit pope, the first pope from the Americas, the first from the Southern Hemisphere and the first non-European Pope since Pope Gregory III, 1272 years earlier.

Throughout his life, both as an individual and as a religious leader, Pope Francis has been noted for his humility, his concern for the poor, and his commitment to dialogue as a way to build bridges between people of all backgrounds, beliefs, and faiths.

Pope Francis has published a compilation of his teachings in two volumes entitled Simple Wisdom: Hold On to Hope, Vol. 1, and Simple Wisdom: The Joy of Evangelization, Vol. 1. He also published his first encyclical entitled The Light of Faith: Lumen Fidei, which is available in English and Spanish.

The Joy of the Gospel: Evangelii Gaudium, recently published, is the long-awaited teaching of Pope Francis on the proclamation of the Gospel. He is calling upon the Church and the world with encouragement to begin a new chapter in evangelization.

Pope Francis has captured the attention of the world with his simple ways, humbleness, and love for the poor and sick.

I have read about Pope Francis speaking to First Communicants, and when I saw this book, I knew I had to have it. It is a well made hardcover book with quality paper. There is quite a bit of text on each page, and I think it would be great to read to young children.

The book has the following five sections with subsections:

    Meeting Jesus in Holy Communion
Jesus Gives Us Strength in the Eucharist - Holy Communion
Meeting Jesus - The Most Important Thing in Life
Sunday -- The Most Important Day for Christians
Our Joy Comes from Communion with Jesus

The Power of the Sacraments and the Light of Christ
The Strength of Baptism and the Eucharist Makes Us Better People
Baptism - A New Life in Christ
    Living Our Baptism Every Day
Jesus - The Way of Salvation and the Light of Life

Holy Confession -- Meeting Christ Who Loves us Dearly
God Is Patient as He Awaits Us
God Forgives Us Our Sins and Is Tender Like a Good Father
Jesus Awaits Us to Forgive Us

The Church Is Like A Mother
The Church Tenderly Teaches Us How to Walk Through Life
She Understands, Gives Encouragement and Offers God's Forgiveness
She Prays For Us and Gives Us to the Lord

    Messages For Life
Do Not Be Afraid to Dream of Great Things!
    Be Generous!
Do Not Let Yourselves Be Robbed of Hope!
Choose True Happiness -- Choose Jesus!

At the back of the book there is a page to write a prayer to Jesus, and a page to write memories of your First Communion.

Every year our parish gives a book to all of our First Communicants. In the past we have given Don't Drink the Holy Water Big Al and A: Big Al and Annie Go to Mass and My First Communion Bible (White). This book, Your First Communion: Meeting Jesus, Your True Joy would also make a great gift for First Communicants.

I LOVE this book!!!! Papa Francis has a talent speaking on a child's level! Of course I wouldn't give this book to a child to be read independently of an adult. It is a spiritual book. It needs to be pondered over with your child! I feel I have gained spiritual insight from it! It is beautiful! This is Papa Francis at his best....speaking of spiritual matters! An asset to any First Holy Communion preparation! Breath of fresh air. I am tired of books watering down our beautiful Catholic Faith for our children....and then we wonder why the leave the Faith. A child is more pure and ready to understand Truth than we give the credit. A must own...must read for everyone!!!!!!

Highly recommend this book to be read in catechism classes and as gifts for a First Communion. Have given this as a gift three times so far and have read it myself, gorgeous! Highly recommended!

I will not give this First Communion Book to my granddaughter. She is seven years old. The book is not written for a child of this age. Reference to 'the path walking into darkness in our lives,' 'is God going to give me a beating?' and numerous other examples are inappropriate. Reference to 'claiming we are without sin, deceiving ourselves, darkness, half truths and lies', reflection on punishment and 'worrying about the same sin tomorrow' are inappropriate and obscure messages for a joyful seven year receiving Holy Communion for the first time. Sentences exemplify complex phraseology and dark references. The artwork is also uninspiring. On page 31, the child-sinner looks terrified of confessing sins. In addition, the quote from Pope Francis undoubtedly has sales value (I fell for it) but there is no other reference to our pope in the book. The pope and his love of small children, is unaddressed. The Pope gimmick, the cartoon artwork, and the failure to write to the level of a second grader is the reason I am returning this book.
