What's interesting is that the author actually uses the techniques that he espouses in his book. For example, he points out the value of an e-mail list, and then he drives you to his website to see which vendor he currently recommends.
The book includes links to places where you can trade reviews and provides a specific approach for getting reviews. He provides an example of a review sheet, discusses ListMania, and So You'd Like to Know.
When he discussed covers he talked about the factors that need to be present in a cover and showed examples of covers that include the "Primal motivators: The Four Fs Fear Fight Food." He discusses and shows examples of fonts that work on covers.
The book describes how to write a description on Amazon:
"Start with a Quote or blurb. One that is punchy, impressive, short and highly praise-worthy. 2. You can add another 1 or 2 of these if you have amazing ones. Try to make sure they are specific to your book somehow. 3. Add a short, basic description of the book - not too much detail or nitty gritty.4. More quotes/ lines from a review here. 5. Call to action. “Get your hands on a copy now! Get yours today! etc”
The advice that he provides is congruent with other knowledgeable authors. Now, I have to assimilate what I have learned and do what's right for me. I will be implementing many of his techniques when I start to promote my work, which will be soon, partly because he's helped me to overcome some of the things that have been holding me back.
In a world that is over-saturated with social media, Tim boils down what an author truly needs to focus on and encourages his readers not to become overwhelmed with being present on every social platform, but rather using the tools they have for specific purposes that fit their needs. His advice on making personal connections with readers and other authors is also stellar info. I came to find that many of the ideas he presents are, at the heart, very simple and straight-forward, yet very insightful and endlessly useful, with real results. His approach to marketing is one much more personal that makes sense for an author, rather than having the mindset of a big money-making publishing machine.
This is a book that I have read and re-read, and will continue to return to as a resource and guideline for my own publishing career as an independent author. A fantastic work, and one I believe every author (fiction and non-fiction alike) ought to keep within reach at all times.
This book is a glorious breath of fresh air. He honestly covers the facts, the methods and the attitudes that have worked for the authors he's worked with. These are not the cheapest or easiest methods to try and he's honest about that. Both he's also clear on the reasons and logic behind why these approaches are worthwhile in the long term.
It's a short, well written book - I read it in about an hour. Most of what I feel is regret I couldn't have read this a decade ago when I began writing books.
