This debut novel by Lynsey Stewart draws you into her characters' world and makes you feel like you are there with them, living side-by-side. The author is decidedly British as is her writing. There is a steady, reserved build and extensive use of British-isms layering beautifully to result in a story that would leave any reader wondering if these are real people and wanting to have drinks with most but wanting to kick others where it counts.
I’ll admit. I spent a lot of the first half of the book building a hatred for Luke and wanting to take Elle under my wing. And while I hate that that ass got so much time dedicated to him, it was done skillfully and resulted in those feelings we’ve all had…Why did I waste so much time on him? It was necessary. It built layers of experience. It made us appreciate the magic of what comes after. It showcases perfectly, that sometimes you have to wade through a lot of crap to find the happy.
Elle is lovely. She’s a sweet girl with not a lot of confidence. She has great parents-maybe her mom is a little too focused on her “getting out there”, but, really a very normal upbringing. What she is truly blessed with is an amazing group of friends. Abi, Gem, and Kate are her tribe and they are fantastic in the way only good friends can be. Actually, I’m completely jealous of her and her friends! They are always ready with chocolate and wine...or tequila for any occasion. And for support when Elle truly sees Luke for what he is…
The prize. The magic. The love, makes it all worthwhile. Ben is everything that Luke isn’t, and thank god! The development of their relationship is magnificent. This is so hard-I don’t want to give too much away. I want you to experience the fall. Ben and Elle are not a fairy-tale. They are not without bumps and problems. But they couldn’t be better suited for each other.
The only thing this book leaves you wanting for is more. Which friend’s story is next? I can’t wait for more!
In walks the uber lovely Ben, gentleman through and through..
but not all is as it seems. Who to choose?
Stewart writes a story that is certainly anything but cookie cutter ordinary, it is sweetness incarnate, it's beautiful and cute. And if it didn't take place in a big city I could easily see it featured in a small town. Elle's groups of friends is highly varied, and so are the men she meets, no one is a flat character, but each are featured in their own way, and I am highly looking forward to reading their stories.
A beautiful story, seemingly inspired by true events.. which makes it ring even truer.. In a world of insta-lust and hook-ups before or instead of dating, the true simpleness of new experiences, clumsily experienced and love sought is a fresh breath of air.
Lynsey M. Stewart's debut story is full of real life wisdom, tender love, bitter heartache and juicy sexy times. And I cannot wait to see where the journeys of writing will take her, and us.
It took a bit to ramp up, as setting up a world, characters, etc. can do. But then I was sucked in, and couldn't put it down...
Elle is sweet, and a bit afraid to grow up, I suspect. She falls under Luke's spell. A lot of us have probably had relationships that involved a bit of gaslighting - where the gent is so positive that HIS way is it, his viewpoint is the correct one, and it can leave you with a bit of a crisis of confidence.
Then along comes Ben, straight into that crisis.....what a darling guy.
The chapters from Luke, and from Ben, were both very insightful and left me feeling I'd go shake Elle if she didn't make the right choice!
I read 80% of this in one sitting. Go forth and read!
