"Finally a good practical book for pet owners written by a veterinarian with a passion for helping pets. Dr. Kenney has a keen insight and uses it to provide good advice and tips that will help every pet owner with the host of things they need to know to save money and keep their pets healthy." --Dr. Jack L. Stephens, President & Founder Pets Best Insurance
"The Wise Pet Owner (bonus section) is the book I have been writing in my head for years, but if too many people read it, it could put us out of business. The material it covers should be mandatory reading for everyone prior to getting a pet." --C. Atkinson, Administrator-Animal Emergency Center in Memphis, Tenn.
"This book has become my bible! It's user friendly & easy to read. Dr. Kenney covers all aspects of pet health insurance including the most essential considerations for pet owners wishing to make the best choice for their pet & for their pocketbook. The nuances of pet insurance are vast, the comparisons confusing, & the task daunting. Dr. Kenney provides an intelligent, methodical step-by-step process for understanding the meaning & differences between hereditary, congenital, & chronic diseases; per-incident deductible vs annual deductible; & monthly premius vs total out-of-pocket expenses. A bonus for the reader is that Dr. Kenney has done a lot of the footwork by naming specific companies & making comparisons between them. He also provides worksheets so readers can design company profiles specifically tailored to their needs. This is the most insightful, well formatted book of its type. Dr. Kenney has broken new ground by taking us into the belly of pet insurance. After reading his book I was able to make an informed & confident decision & get the pet insurance I needed. I can't say enough about this book - it's terrific. Thank you, thank you Dr. Kenney!" --Desiree, California
"This book is the most fact-filled, comprehensive look at pet insurance that I have ever seen." --Mike Hemstreet, PetInsuranceReview.com
From the Author
For years, when a client asked me about pet insurance, I simply gave them a brochure about the only company that offered policies to pet owners in the United States. Then several years ago, I began receiving brochures from pet insurance companies that I had never heard of. So, I decided to call these companies and ask questions so that I would be more knowledgeable when my clients inquired about pet insurance for their pets.
I soon learned that there were about 10 companies that offered policies and they all were very different. Some companies didn't offer coverage or offered very limited coverage for diseases or problems that I felt were very important from my perspective as a veterinarian. From reading reviews and discussions online about pet insurance, it soon became obvious that many of the complaints about this company or that company were because pet owners didn't adequately research pet insurance before purchasing a policy.
That's when the idea of sharing what I had learned from my research in a book that would benefit all interested pet owners and not just my own clients came into focus. I also realized that I would have to dig even deeper in my research to offer worthwhile and truly helpful information to pet owners. I was fortunate to develop relationships with veterinarians who are on the staffs of several pet insurance companies as well as the Presidents and CEOs some of the companies. They unselfishly answered my phone calls and e-mails and taught me much, not only about their own company, but about the pet insurance industry in general.
This book is written from my perspective as a veterinarian. After all, veterinarians are the ones who diagnose and treat the diseases and problems that pet owners eventually file claims for. So, we have a pretty good idea of what's important when looking for a company and policy to cover your pet.
I have had the opportunity to be interviewed for newspaper and magazine article, radio shows, etc. and I must admit that it is frustrating for me. It is impossible to cover a complex subject such as pet insurance in these situations. I find myself wanting to say, "Just get the book and read it!" I am endeavoring to update the book once or twice a year because pet insurance companies are constantly "tweaking" their policies to try and gain a competitive advantage.
Although the book doesn't tell you which company to buy pet insurance from (there aren't any perfect companies), it does provide you with the information and tools needed to do your own research and make a wise choice if you heed the warnings and advice given.
