The book gave me a pretty good idea of some things to ask and/or research with regard to any areas and properties we look at. In many instances it may not have given as much info as I would have liked, but it gave enough to make me aware of something I should think about and research more, and again, for $3 that's a deal.
Someone complained in one review that most of it is common sense. That may be true, but buying a home in a huge/long life investment, so if for $3 I get even ONE good tip that is money well spent, and I certainly got a LOT more than that. As an example I had researched property taxes and knew they are low in Hawaii, but one thing I hadn't thought about is that the cost of energy can be much higher. At least according to this book, so that gives me an item to look into and factor into my equations.
I knew there were noisy frogs in some areas, but was humored to find that they are so bad in some areas they even result in lower land values.
I am very pleased I bought this and am already doing further research because of things in it.
I had done a lot of past research knowing that I had wanted to live in Hawai'i, and I still was able to obtain much information that I was unaware of. My wife and I had already purchased our building lot and are extremely happy with the location in spite of having bought the property prior to reading the book. I can see however, how we could have easily made a terrible mistake with the building lot purchase or even a home, since many areas of Hawai'i like most places are not quite what they seem to be until you spend enough time in that location, as well as talk to quite a few locals and frequent travelers of Hawai'i. I have seen quite a few newcomers that had to re-locate on the same island after their initial purchase, just because they either bought site unseen or saw the area during a vacation trip only.
The book is so reasonably priced and packed full of information, that anyone considering or that has decided on the move to Hawai'i should buy this book!
