After graduating medical school in 2001, he completed residency training in Family Practice and Emergency Medicine. He has worked in clinic and hospital settings, both urban and rural, in British Columbia, Alberta, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and New Zealand.

Currently he is an executive of the Victoria Emergency Physicians Association and the hospital Medical Staff Association with a special interest in business, information technology, mindfulness in medicine, transitions in care, and physician wellness.

He works closely with the Divisions of Family Practice: Transitions in Care with projects including Familiar Faces, which provides digital care plans for the most frequent users of local Emergency Departments.

A Clinical Assistant Professor with the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine, he enjoys teaching and personal as well as professional development. He has presented at conferences and volunteered with community organizations such as the YMCA Camp Thunderbird and the Victoria Minor Hockey Association.

Dr Voon has hosted screenings of documentaries including “Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age” and “Us & Them” a film about homelessness and addictions.

Disappointing; there’s a great book waiting to be written on this subject, but this isn’t it. Very little info that isn’t widely available elsewhere. Very little useful advice on how to stay out of the ED in the first place. And the explanations for why the ED is the way it is seemed like a self-serving justification for the terrible experience it is for most.

So many things explained about the ER. I worked clerically in the ER for over 10 years; days, nights whenever. So much understandable frustration and this book explains so much. “Yup, yup, yup”. I’m reading this and feeling such validation. There’s so much we wish patients understood and been made aware of and we know you’re upset but everyone should BUY THIS BOOK! Know before you go. Read it now. Oh, and if you see a staff member sitting, writing something, eating a sandwich try and understand that that person has probably been on their feet or have even been sitting on top of someone, pumping their chest which has lead them to not being able to sit or eat for maybe 7 or 8 hours. Know BEFORE you go.

I returned this book and they said they refunded my credit card, but I searched through the last 3 months worth of credit card statements of the card they said they refunded and there is not a credit there. I never received the refund. I highly recommend do not order this book.

I believe everyone should have a copy of this book! Actually, emergency departments should have posters with content from this book, so that people understand what exactly happens in the ED!!! This is an excellent resource for everyone, whether you plan to go to ED, are already there, or you left (and complain that 'nobody did anything'). Loved the tables and the easy to digest information - thank you for writing this!
