Tamara Levitt

Sean Cooper

"Your Kids, Their Money is an excellent guide to the foundations of financial literacy. From how to handle allowances to how to think about wealth, Clifton Corbin provides both plenty of practical tips and a clever analysis of what money really is. It might change your own understanding of personal finance as much as your kids'."
Erica Alini
Author of Money Like You Mean It
Drawing on his master's in business administration (MBA), finance experience, and practices with his own children, Clifton Corbin provides a guide for the modern parent. About the author

Clifton D. Corbin, MBA, PMP, was a business consultant with over two decades of experience when he left the office to become a full-time stay-at-home dad. During this time, he co-launched Tapvigo, a touchless content delivery solution that brings digital content to the physical world. He has also authored his first book focused on providing parents with the skills and tools to teach finical literacy to their children.
Clifton graduated from Niagara University with a master’s degree in business administration. He has spent years studying finance and is a passionate advocate for advancing the financial literacy of children and young adults. When not reading or listening to podcasts about finance or economics, he can be found fixing-up his 100+-year-old Toronto home, playing basketball with his kids, chairing a PTA meeting or DJing in his basement.

However, there is one key piece of information I was looking for in the book, when you talked about privacy. There wasn't a mention about "Credit Freeze" for protection / privacy from identity theft or fraud.
If you were to call any credit card company they will likely tell you to put a freeze on your credit.
That would be the only thing I would suggest to add to the book.
Great job overall!
Definitely would recommend it for new parents or parents who want to start having money conversations with their kids.

I love the idea “ collect on your Debt”

From undoing the old fashioned "allowance for chores" mentality to teaching your kids how to build wealth and financial security, this book holds your hand through complex concepts and breaks them down for you, so you can break them down for your kids. Each chapter ends with key takeaways and resources, as well as provides activities you can do with your kids to not only explain these concepts further, but actually practice them!
What I love most, though, is that this book shows you how to teach your kids much more than "how money works"...it covers teaching them to understand the value of things in their lives, helps them understand the difference between needs and wants, and shows you how to practice borrowing with your kids.
There are no hard and fast rules for what you should do at what age, so you can jump into whatever chapter is appropriate for your kids based on their mathematical ability, the kinds of questions they're asking about money, and their age appropriate needs. You can read the chapters applicable to you, in any order, since they're each self-contained nuggets of wisdom broken down by concept. Whether you've got littles just starting to get their allowances, older kids walking neighbourhood dogs for extra cash, a teen starting their first job or about to go to college, you will find something applicable and useful to you and your kids. I'm 41 and learned something new! Need I say more?
Why are you still reading this? BUY THIS BOOK ALREADY!

If the concepts seem familiar (like you've read or heard them before) - they are! The basic principles of teaching people (kids and adults) about money management are the same. The "how" and the "why" however, bear repeating...over and over again. This book also goes further into some great background and research and examples that aim to solidify strategies and help establish healthy money habits. In order to effectively teach our children, we need to understand the "why" ourselves.
Besides working with adults, I teach financial literacy to children online and in-person and the questions and ideas that Corbin highlights in his book are things I hear from children around the world ("is that person "rich" because they drive a nice car?"). The resources provided and discussion questions for families are important tools that will help our children learn how to manage "their money" now and in the future.
I highly recommend this book (and I do! See screenshot!) as a timely and current guide on weaving money lessons into our everyday conversations with kids.

As a high school teacher I was especially impressed with the chapters on debt and credit. I have already incorporated some of the information and lessons into some classroom discussions. I especially enjoyed the Key Takeaways and Activities sections that followed each chapter. They are very useful.
The book has valuable lessons for children of all ages, not to mention adults. Drawing from the authors mistakes, we can hopefully avoid some of the "self inflicted grief" that plagued Clifton Corbin in his younger years. I truly enjoyed reading about his journey towards financial literacy. I will be recommending this book to my friends with young kids.

I was raised in a family that didn't talk about money and credit score, saving etc, I had no idea what I was doing in my 20's and don't want to make the same mistakes my parents made.
This book gave my husband and I great insight and the tools to set our children up for success and hopefully they will make better choices.
The way the writer talks about his own experiences with money and debt made me feel better about my own situation and gave me the confidence and good tips and tools to get back on track.
