Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

The board book version of this popular recitation of animal characteristics is equally as delightful as other editions, with one key improvement: it's inedible. This robust reissue follows lovable Lloyd the llama on his quest to find out what percentage of the baby animal population has llamas for mamas. The rhymes are original and infectious, and the riddles are sure to have children shouting out the answers in anticipation of turning the page.

Youngsters often exhibit an insatiable appetite for adorable baby animals, and Is Your Mama a Llama provides plenty of fodder for fawning. Illustrator Steven Kellogg, however, manages to keep the pictures sweet without being saccharine. And rest assured, no matter how often your little one is compelled to kiss the critters, the sturdy board-book format will stand the test of time (and of course, slobber). (Ages 0 to 4)

About the Author

Steven Kellogg has illustrated more than a hundred books, including IS YOUR MAMA A LLAMA? and THE DAY JIMMY'S BOA ATE THE WASH. He has also retold and illustrated the adventures of tall-tale heroes such as Paul Bunyan, Mike Fink, and Johnny Appleseed. He lives in Essex, New York.
Deborah Guarino, is the author of the children"s classic, Is Your Mama a Llama? Selling more than a million copies, her playful book"s popularity spans two generations and is currently available in five different editions, including an animated DVD narrated by actress Amy Madigan and a lively musical version by composer Andy Mayo. It was also included in Oprah"s Book Club for Kids, quoted in an episode of the prime-time series Medium, and endorsed by actress Jennifer Garner in People magazine, who recently became a literacy advocate on behalf of the Save the Children organization. The title of her book was even used, in 2010, as the answer to a $2000 question on the iconic game show, Jeopardy! Most recently Deborah was honored by Denver"s Preschool Program in Colorado, which chose her book as its 2011 choice for the “One Book, One Denver” event, during which 1500 copies of Is Your Mama a Llama? were donated by corporate sponsors McDonald"s and Kaplan Early Learning Centers to preschool and Head Start programs throughout Denver. During this event Deborah did tandem readings of her book with Denver"s Mayor and Colorado"s state representative, who read the Spanish translation of the title while Deborah read the original version. During her public appearances at Denver"s famous Convention Hall and at its largest public library, Deborah was delighted to be accompanied by two live local llamas, both of whom seemed to enjoy all the activities as much as she did! Born and raised in New Jersey, Deborah later lived in New York and London, where two of her original works were produced and broadcast by the BBC"s Radio 4. In addition to writing for children, she"s an artist and actor who also works as a freelance advertising copywriter, editor, playwright, actor, director, and professional speaker who frequently visits schools, libraries and literacy events across the U.S., giving fun, interactive presentations on writing and the creative process for children and adults alike. These presentations include a reading of her book and the story behind its creation, a question and answer period, fun activities like a narrated, improvisational skit, interactive nonsense songs, and lively performances of works in progress. Deborah"s also the proud single mother of two whose oldest son, Josh, currently performs stand-up comedy in New York while Dan, a high school senior, hopes to pursue a career in art and special effects. Deborah Guarino's best-selling children's classic, "Is Your Mama a Llama?" (Scholastic, Inc.) is now celebrating almost 25 years in print! With more than a million copies sold, this playful book's popularity now spans two generations. It's available in five different editions, including Spanish, Arabic, and E-book versions, and has even been animated by Weston Woods on DVD. In 2011 it was chosen as the children's title for Colorado's "One Book, One Denver" literacy event, partially sponsored by McDonald's, during which more than a thousand copies were donated to preschools and Head Start Programs citywide.

"Is Your Mama a Llama?" was also chosen as one of the first selections in Oprah's Book Club for Kids, quoted in an episode of the prime-time series "Medium," endorsed by actress Jennifer Garner (a recent literacy advocate on behalf of the "Save the Children" organization), who appeared reading the book in PEOPLE Magazine. The book has become so iconic that its title was a $2000 clue on "Jeopardy!" in 2010, and used as the #7 Down clue in the "New York Sunday Times Crossword" in 2013!

Deborah, born and raised in New Jersey, comes from a large, talented family that includes professional and award-winning artists, craftsmen, photographers, and many, many teachers. Inheriting a genetic tendency to be multi-talented, Deborah is also a professional actor--with roles in theatre, radio, TV and film--as well as an artist specializing in portraits, caricatures, costume design and sculpture.

An avid reader and writer since childhood, Deborah published her first fiction--a weekly mystery serial--anonymously in her church paper when she was only 13, and had her first professional sale--a children's story--published nationally in "MS. Magazine" when she was 19. During her career she's also written several produced plays--one broadcast over the BBC's Radio 4 when she lived in London--and has worked as an editor, copywriter and journalist in addition to becoming the popular author of "Is Your Mama a Llama?". So popular, in fact, that for the last 20 years she's also been a frequent visiting author at schools, libraries and literacy events across the U.S., where her lively, interactive presentations on writing and the creative process entertain children and teachers alike.

These presentations, tailored to the age of her audience, are an exciting, eclectic mix of lively story-telling, works-in-progress, improvisational theatre and original, interactive songs, art, and funny, inspiring, behind-the-scenes glimpses of the creative process and the tenacity it takes to succeed in any creative field. Appropriate for audiences ranging from preschool toddlers to college-age teaching students at universities (where her book is frequently used in their curriculum),her presentations are interactive, informative, dynamic and guaranteed to make you laugh.

Deborah is the proud single mom of Josh and Dan, her two talented sons who are also pursuing careers in the arts, as well as "mama" to a menagerie of pets that doesn't actually include llamas, but does feature two parrots, four cats, a fish, an iguana, a pigeon rescued as a baby from a theatre on Broadway, and one very confused little dog named "Fuji," all of whom inspire her work on a daily basis.

If you'd be interested in having author Deborah Guarino visit your school or literacy event, please contact her directly at Deborahguarino@aol.com, or through Scholastic at Scholastic.com, where you can also learn more about valuable school discounts on book purchases for your event.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book
By Bella on April 3, 2018
I got this new. Nice book I purchase this book for my toddler boys (1 and 2yrs). Book is about a baby llama asking a bunch of other animals if their mom is a llama until he figures out only his mom is the llama. This book teaches the characteristics of the animals mentioned (a bat, swan, cow, seal, kangaroo, and the llama), great way for a toddler to learn about animals and what is special about them and discover new animals they may not know. Also has a little rhyme to it which is great for little children. Not a huge fan of the graphics it comes off to me a little dull but that maybe because for kids I love brightly colored images.
