From the Back Cover

SHE CAN RUN FROM THE PAST.
Catherine Ling created a brand-new life for herself, far from her rough beginnings on the streets of Hong Kong. But someone has followed her trail...and is playing a deadly game with her, striking closer to her heart with each blow. First, there's the death of the former prostitute who helped Catherine when she was still a child. Next, the CIA operative who had known her ever since she was pulled into the agency at the age of fourteen. And now Luke is in the killer's sights.

CAN SHE HIDE FROM THE TRUTH?
Luke is Catherine's only son. Kidnapped when he was only two years old, Catherine devoted nine years of her life to finding him-and she will not lose him again. Can Catherine, who has made countless enemies throughout her life, protect the ones she loves the most-including Eve Duncan, whose forensic skills were instrumental in freeing Luke-without putting her own life at risk? All she knows is that she will die trying...if the killer doesn't get to her first.

Johansen is so good I've never bothered to review any of her previous books (I've read them all) because anyone who's read one has gone back for all she's written. She never disappoints. Her cast of characters continues to expand and evolve into their own books and this books main character, Catherine Ling, was introduced many years ago as a street waif determined to survive by any means possible and survive she does blossoming into a remarkable woman with incredible talents and skills who's main concern is to help those who are helpless and she never backs down and never gives up - she began as a lethal loner and over the course of her career she's managed to surround herself with an intriguing, colorful, deadly, dangerous, loving, devoted cast of characters. Each as unique and intriguing as Catherine is. Can't wait for more on Cameron, the first man to intrigue Catherine on an intimate level and a man with some very exceptional talents all his own. Johansen grabs you and draws you in on the opening pages and never lets go - once started I couldn't stop until the last page was turned. Great way to spend a weeknight and the rest of my weekend! Loved it and can't say enough good things about it...from a voracious reader in foggy San Francisco.

I have read all of Johansen's Books from her Romances to the Thrillers and I find that lately all her books seem very much a formula. I feel that because not only the plots of the stories but also the characters one-dimensional personalities and modes of speaking are all the same in all of this series books. I have always enjoyed her writing but now I find myself getting bored with it.

Catherine Ling is in all kinds of trouble when an old enemy decides to kill everyone she loves. But Catherine, despite her feeling that she is a loner, has many more friends than she thought. When she realizes that her friends are at risk, one of the first people she contacts in Eve Duncan. But not in time to keep Jane from being hurt and needing Caleb to help her heal.

Eve is assisted by Richard Cameron who is a sort of friend, sort of adversary who wants a relationship with Catherine. Like Catherine he is very, very competent and very, very dangerous. The villain Santos would go up against them if he was sane. But his actions prove that he is not. He keeps trying to attack those close to Catherine but Catherine and her allies keep foiling his plans. But the threat won't be over until Santos is dead and Catherine has no qualms about killing him if she can find him.

This story was a lot about relationships and love. From the budding relationship Catherine has with the son who was stolen away from her for nine years to the relationship Eve has with her dead daughter Bonnie, relationships are at the core of this story. It takes a threat of the magnitude of Santos before Catherine realizes the number of bonds she has actually built.

This wasn't a mystery since we knew the villain's name and intentions from the beginning but the tension came from wondering if he would manage to out-think and out-maneuver Catherine and her allies.

This is the fourth book in the Catherine Ling series and was an excellent addition to the series.

Really? She wrote "twisted lips" or grimace" on every page! The crudest writing I have seen in print in a long time. Not one but at least four supernatural characters. Just your everyday folks who grimace a lot and twist their lips.

In general I like this author. However, when you read a lot by the same author the books do start to become very formulaic. That is starting to happen to this author. Her characters are quite complex and you learn more about them as they intertwine in many of her books. This book focuses on the character of Catherine Ling who, if you have read others by this author, you already know fairly well. This book brings out a softer side to her, more of a maternal side. When I first began reading Iris Johansen one of the things I loved about her books is that frequently the unexpected happened; making you gasp while reading. However, that was missing in this book. Overall it is still a good read, very entertaining, but it doesn't bring the same level of story telling to it as her earlier novels.

I enjoyed the book, but Johansen is getting some what predictable in her stories. And I am not sure I will read future ones because an example, I am sure she is going to squeeze another sequel out the story and the main villain really did not die as the ending of this one implied. Not positive, but relativity sure I know what her premise for the plot in the next book.

This book has so much action and suspense going on from the very beginning. It kept me reading to find out what Catherine, Cameron, Hu Chang, Luke, Sam and Venable were going to get into next. I like having all my favorite characters like Eve, Joe, Jane and Caleb together with Catherine. I want to find out more about Catherine and Cameron's relationship which I hope will be in the next book. Jane is still trying to get over Trevor but I would like to see her find her self again before she deals with her relationship with Caleb. Thank you Iris Johansen for another fantastic book.
