Each chapter covers a different type of event: bookstore signings, book festivals, industry events, etc. Although the list might seem overwhelming, you should keep in mind that Tyler only presents the different possibilities and it’s up to the authors to attend the ones they feel are better suited to their needs and goals (and financial means). The guide explains how to figure out if your return on investment is worthwhile, and how NOT to sound like a pushy used-car salesman every time you meet a potential buyer. It also reminds authors that sometimes, the rewards of book events are not monetary, like networking with industry leaders and meeting readers.
I wish Tyler’s chapter on what to do when no one attends your event had been lengthier. Modest turnouts are something indie authors will surely encounter and a few additional strategies to deal with those situations would have been helpful.
Unless your last name is King or Rowling, it’s highly unlikely that your publisher will organize your public appearances for you. That’s why this guide, with its honest and direct approach, is a highly valuable tool for authors who need to put themselves “out there”. The free extras (scripts and templates) are also a nice touch.
The guide’s best advice ? “Prepare, prepare, prepare”!
Perhaps the most useful for me was Chapter 9: Reading the Perfect Excerpt. Fiction authors will find that this section explains how to highlight your work by choosing parts that go quickly and engage readers—even if you spoil a little of the plot. Another fantastic point is to make sure you take breaths and read slowly enough for listeners to follow. This might sound like something everyone should already know, but you’d be surprised how many events I’ve attended where the author spews an excerpt at the audience, leaving everyone confused and more than a little less likely to purchase the book.
Overall, Tyler hit every point an author should know when constructing their events. I know I’ll be referring to this handy guide in the future as I plan all of mine!
