Format: Audio CD
In Your Room is easily the happiest-sounding record Anneke van Giersbergen had made in her decade-and-a-half career up to this point. With the exception of three songs, the music on here is upbeat and sounds positively cheerful, instantly hummable and catchy. The lyrics are exquisite and heartfelt, in the same singer-songwriter vein as Air. "The World" is a poignant piece that could serve as an anthem for the many, many people who trudge through life aimlessly, unhappy and unaware of their potential. "Wonder" and "Home Again" are piano ballads that come the closest to the melancholic territory that comprised the lion's share of her previous work. "I Want" is the best song Anneke has written as a solo artist. The instrumentation is irresistibly groovy, and her voice absolutely drips with the richly gorgeous quality that made her my favorite singer years ago (just listen to the way she sings "what makes you think you are a man"). The poppy sound and simplicity may alienate some fans who discovered van Giersbergen via the metal community, but I find this to be a thoroughly enchanting album. It just might be my favorite of 2009.
