The author's own words summarize the content of the book, "This book reflects my transformation from a Harvard-trained cardiologist who practiced exclusively modern, conventional Western medicine to a better-rounded physician with a holistic practice that incorporates mindfulness, Eastern philosophy, and the mind-body-soul connection into health, and into life as a whole."
The central theme of this 260+ pages book is "The heart is the essence of our being and of our existence."
The subject is presented in clear, concise, well organized ten chapters. The writing is plain and comprehensible to laymen, and devoid of scientific jargon. The syntax is crisp, lucid and coherent.
The first two chapters describe the embryological development, physiology and diseases of the heart and its malfunction. In addition Dr.Thaik explains, in details, the relationship of concomitant diseases that adversely affect the heart such as obesity, Metabolic Syndrome, diabetes, hypertension, smoking, and high cholesterol.
The author also adds some of the Eastern Medicine perspectives on the importance of the heart, "Hridaya is a Sanskrit word meaning "this heart center." It is said to be different from the physical heart, and it is thought to be located on the right side of the body. Ancient Asian cultures consider this heart center to be the seat of the soul." She goes into great detail about Ayurvedic healing, Chakras, Chi/Qi and Chinese medicine. Dr. Thaik, a practicing Buddhist, expounds on the merits of contemplative Eastern philosophies and the practice of meditation, "which focuses on the spiritual heart, we join in oneness, with one universal heart, one universal mind, and one universal consciousness." This theme is repeated throughout the remaining chapters.

I have really been excited about the new research in heart health. Much of that has been pioneered by Dr. Oz, Dr. Andrew Weil and other medical doctors who are looking for cause and prevention rather than fixing the problem after it occurs. Dr. Cynthia Thaik has gone beyond others because of her unique background in both eastern and western medicine.

She explains in understandable terms how the heart works,what factors affect your heart and how to make the changes to be healthy. This is not just another "heart healthy diet" book. Of course, she does include that but she also explains how your emotions, your spirit, even your breathing can effect your hearts health.

Beside the key information on exercise and diet, she includes:
- Herbs for Heart Health
- Little-Known Superfoods
- How You Can I Battle Stress
- Controlled Breathing
- Meditation
- Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy

This is not a total in-depth book on all of these topics, but it does explain the role of each of them in achieving good health. This book is well written, and aimed at the average reader with no medical background. If you are into alternative health and want more than the average mainstream book, you will probably enjoy this book.

I was originally interested in this book because I have a family history of heart-related ailments including high cholesterol and hypertension. I have had trouble with my own triglycerides in the past. Knowing what ailments may be facing me in the future, I figure it is best to be prepared. As a scientist, myself (I have a Ph.D. in biochemistry), I am firmly grounded in Western ways of thinking. However, I've also been a practitioner of kundalini yoga for several years and have a general interest in Eastern ways of thinking. This book sounded like it would be right up my alley, and I thought the author, Dr. Cynthia Thaik, seemed like an excellent (and believable) person to discuss the issue from both sides, being a Western-trained cardiologist but having grown up experiencing many aspects of a traditional Asian culture.

This book is written at an appropriate level for a general audience, so even if you do not have a scientific or medical background, do not fear. One thing I really liked about the author's approach was the mixture of peer-reviewed scientific information and personal stories of her patients and of her own family. With my background, I like to see the studies to back up the claims. But personal stories can be compelling as well, and the mixture here is seamless and works very well to emphasize the points Dr. Thaik wishes to make.

Also, if you want to investigate further, there is an extensive bibliography at the end, including citations to dozens of studies in medical journals, websites for health organizations, a list of relevant documentaries, and so forth. If some topic catches your interest, you aren't left hanging!

"Your Vibrant Heart" by Dr. Cynthia Thaik is well-written and continues the conversation of why taking care of our hearts involves more than just tending to them on a physical plane. The importance of integrating Eastern and Western medicine approaches to maintaining a healthy, vibrant heart is wonderfully presented in this easy to read book for the non-medical audience. It is clear that it has become Dr. Thaik's unique gift and calling to share more of this message (that has been formulated from both personal experience and academic study) to a wider audience. I commend this effort!

As a practicing interventional cardiologist, I know that it is hard to adequately convey this important message to our patients in the time we have to see them in our current system. She is contributing greatly to the mission of creating a more conscious way of practicing medicine with her own patients and now with this bold book. The necessity of a vibrant heart that leads to a vibrant life cannot be overemphasized. I enthusiastically recommend her book to my patients and others to further open up this important conversation!
