From the Author
Early in His ministry, Jesus recognized the simple fact that He couldn't do it all and that He'd need help. Jesus' solution? Volunteers. That's right. Jesus selected volunteers to join His ministry effort. Today, we call twelve of Jesus' early volunteers apostles. We read about their selection and training in the Gospels, and their ministry results are outlined in the first part of the book of Acts and various New Testament epistles.
Ministry strategy hasn't changed much over the past couple millennia. Today, there is still too much to do but not enough time to do it, and no one person possesses the talents, gifts, abilities, and anointing to do it all. Your solution? Volunteers!
From the Inside Flap
Chris is a master teacher and an experienced practitioner in one of the most effective church models of our day, but that's not why you should read this book.
So why read this book? In answering this question, Steve Jobs comes to mind. Years ago, with the debut of the iPad, Jobs gave us something we didn't know we needed. Now, people everywhere, engage their digital worlds with beauty and ease that they didn't know was possible.
Chris has done the same. Now pastors and church staff everywhere can move into their volunteer worlds with beauty and ease that they didn't know was possible.
Your Volunteers provides transferable insight that is just amazing. You will quickly wonder how you did ministry without this profoundly practical guidance. For example, consider:
- Are you aware of how "training" is different from "equipping?"
- Do you know the three things every volunteer wants?
- Would you like to have a memorable road map for deal-
ing with difficult volunteers?
As you engage Your Volunteers, I trust that you will be as grateful for Chris Mavity as I am. He has taken the time to share both his genuine passion and his break-through wisdom so that you and your volunteers might win for the mission of Jesus.

This is a quick read, less than 100 pages, and pretty basic but it will energize good ministry leaders and help reorient those leaders to create environments where they have a healthy structure. The book is broken into two parts. Part one is volunteer environment and part two is volunteer operations. Start with a healthy environment and implement healthy operations in that environment.
Part I: Your Volunteer Environment
Chapter 1: Value: You Know It When You See It
Chapter 2: Energy: Not Much Happens Without It
Chapter 3: Alignment: Working In Unison
Part II: Your Volunteer Operations
Chapter 4: Recruit: Ask and Select Well
Chapter 5: Train: Invest First
Chapter 6: Place: Match People and Positions
Chapter 7: Support: Be There When It Matters
Chapter 8: Monitor: Evaluate for Effectiveness
There isn't anything earth shattering here and it probably isn't anything just about anyone who's been doing an adequate job leading volunteer teams for a few years couldn't come up with. However, to many of our volunteer structures are just that adequate or average. The principles and instructions laid out in Your Volunteers: From Come and See to Come and Serve if applied in context to the local ministry will increase the effectiveness of that volunteer structure. Well worth the price.
"Your Volunteers" is an easy and practical read filled with tips and tweaks to your current structure. Whether 100, 1000 or 10,000, the nice thing about the book is that it is scalable to any size of ministry. An added bonus is that it is written in such a way that you can unpack it as a team because each chapter has highlighted main points and thought-provoking discussion questions. I plan on picking up several more copies to distribute down through our leadership teams.
