Halston has never shown her journals to anyone. They are her deepest, darkest desires and her only outlet in her conservative existence. When she loses her rawest journal, she is too embarrassed to ask around for it, thinking people will judge her harshly. When a sexy photographer says he found it, she wants to deny it's hers. But when she realizes he isn't repulsed, but actually understands and accepts her, she finally feels alive, and that maybe she isn't as broken as she thought.
Finn and Halston begin a friendship and slowly build their trust in each as their fiery chemistry explodes on film. They combine his photographs and her words on-line and begin to attract a following. Their excitement that people love their work put added pressure on them when neither was ready to completely let the other into their lives. Halston didn't want to hurt her family and Finn just wanted someone to want to choose him first. When fame feeds into the addictive side of their personalities, will it cause their passion to burn out too quickly or will fate finally give Finn an opportunity to work for his happy ending?
I love the ease of how Ms Hawkins describes what is happening around, and with, Finn & Halston. I felt fully ensconced, like I was right there, experiencing every action, thought and emotion with them. Their relationship progression was lovely, frustrating, heartwarming, and very hot and sensual. They helped each other feel stronger and more confident, but it was never an easy journey as they struggled to overcome past mistakes. Finn is so sweet, thoughtful, and commanding. He was the perfect fit to temper Halstons impulsiveness. I loved how smart, and loyal she was and how she really came into her own throughout the book. This is a beautifully poetic, exhilarating, and sexy story that will have you engaged from beginning to end and leave you wanting more.
Finn has got a tangled up past. It's messy and the outcome became all tangled up. His finding the journal seemed like fate. One explicit journal with lot initimate thoughts. He's the kind of guy that I wished he would find his HEA someday in the future. Living in the aftermath of what happened before is no walk in the park. Consequences and repercussions from mistakes. He just wants to get back on track and catch a break after all that.
Though I did not read the previous book I know how it went down and all that. Finding that place in your life is hard, much less finding that one who wakes you up from the stupor. That's where the journal falls into place. Meeting Halston was not he expected, her words and feelings in the poetry vs the person. He is enraptured and intrigued and wants more. It's a case of falling for the writer, which book worms will know how that feels, is he really for the woman on the pages?
I like flawed characters for some reason and Finn is that. He felt his struggles with pursuing his art and passion. He's also the kind of person who knows where he went wrong and knows better now. Resolve is stronger and more determined. Life is complicated enough without the mysterious Halsted in the pictures. Upon meeting the attraction is tangible, actions intrigued, whose thoughts consumed Finn and he can be intense. He and Halsted are pretty complex characters, I get the impression Halsted more so.
Halsted is what I'd to think as confused or lost or uncertain. Her issues on control I get it. She also has an addictive personality which Hawkins played well and explains. I think in a way both she and Finn are good for each other. But he must figure out how to give her what she needs. She awakened that side of him. He seemed to be able to push Halsted to be herself. Realize that being imperfect is ok. To find a way to support one another and get through it all. Took her a long way to get there to man up. I like her determination though but it's not an easy finish.
Finn's story comes full circle which I liked knowing. You know closure. I feel like getting to see him in another light also makes his story compelling. I can feel growth even just in this book alone, I see glimpses of his past and think that's great. The use of social media for this book was a very clever addition too. Jessica Hawkins does a wonderful job mixing story, emotion, and steam. She has good characterization and makes their story interesting.
