After an obligatory Mayor Marsha intervention, Bailey and Kenny are conscripted into heading the toy drive for the Future Warriors of Maa-zib, FG's version of the Girl Scouts. Chloe, Bailey's daughter, is a FWM, and she is utterly precious. Anyway, Bailey and Kenny are attracted to each other, but face some obstacles. Bailey thinks she isn't in Kenny's league, as she is a "normal" mom, and his normal type is a supermodel. Kenny has some demons to face when it comes to dating someone with a child. Despite the misgivings on both sides, they spend time together.
Yes, they spend time together. They go furniture shopping. Bailey inexplicably invites Kenny along to her home inspection(this is like their first real interaction. It was weird.) Kenny organizes the masses to help Bailey move. They go on a triple date, and a Christmas party. All very Fool's Goldish. Bless their hearts, these two have about zero chemistry. The extent of the love scenes in Yours for Christmas is two kisses. That's it. Apparently the author didn't feel very inspired by these two, either.
We have the Christmas parade, the visit to every shop in town, we catch up with the couples from the last trilogy, the town rallies to prove how wonderful and nice it is, we meet new suspects for upcoming novels....It all has a feeling of been there, done that. Don't get me wrong - the story is heartwarming and sweet, I guess, but frankly, would have worked better as a Fool's Gold catch up novel, sans romance. Well, it was sans romance, but I'm not sure it was on purpose.
If you are a FG addict, you will want to read this. If you are new to the series, don't start here.
Bottom line - this was a 3.5 star read for me, rounded up. I liked the catch up part (4 stars), but the romance was just okay(3 stars). That said, a not-her-best-work Susan Mallery novel is still pretty good reading. If you are looking for a no-steam-at-all, very sweet romance/FG visit, this will work for you.
Bailey Voss moved to Fool’s Gold with her daughter, Chloe who is now seven. Last Christmas was the first Christmas without her husband, Will. It was hard on both of them; but especially on Chloe. Baily despaired over Chloe’s recovering from her loss. She worked hard with her and got her involved with the FWM (Future Warriors of Maa-zib), Fool’s Gold’s version of Girl Scouts and Brownies. Chloe has blossomed and is the wonderful, outgoing little girl she had always been. Now Baily and Chloe are moving into their new house just after the first of December. Bailey has a wonderful job as assistant to Fool’s Gold’s Mayor Marsha Tilson. Bailey has good friends in town as does Chloe. It seems as if life is finally great for the Voss girls or is it?
Kenny Scott was one of the founding members of Score, an advertising company based in Fool’s Gold. He was an NFL player and a Super Bowl winning receiver. His teammates and partners have his back as he has theirs. Now he is on his was to see Mayor Marsha. He can stand before a room full of clients and be totally calm; but going to see one little lady who happens to be Mayor is something else. Mayor Marsha has a way of knowing everything even before it happens and has a way of manipulating you into doing what she wants you to do. He knows he will want to say no to her; but can he?
Angel and Taryn, Gatekeepers for the FWM Sprouts, are leaving on their honeymoon. They will be gone while the Sprouts are supposed to be doing their civic project of gathering toys for children for Christmas. They need official chaperones and Bailey and Kenny are tapped. Bailey is overjoyed as her daughter is a Sprout and this will give her extra time with her daughter. Kenny is not so overjoyed. It means he has to work cooperatively to a bombshell of a woman, Bailey. Kenny has a dating rule- no single moms. He had dated Natalie and she became pregnant. He proposed marriage but she refused. They moved in together and had James. When James was three, Natalie wanted a divorce to marry a man she had loved for years. He had been married but finally was free. She took James because he was the other man’s son, not Kenny’s. Kenny’s heart was broken and he refused to get close to another man’s child to avoid hurt. However, he would like to be friends with Bailey.
What is a girl to do? She could easily love Kenny yet he only wants to be friends. Can she do that? Can he?
That being said, I did like what I read. I love that Kenny is so sweet and loving towards Chloe and that we know that she will never have to feel like she is not an important part of his life. I am glad that I FINALLY got to know the situation that made Kenny the way that he was and what it took to get him to be the man in the end. I was surprised by some of the stuff that I learned about Bailey and her relationship with her late husband. I will say that when Kenny and Bailey got together they knew that they didn't have to deal with the BS and could start their lives together.
All in all, it was an OK Fools Gold Book, but I really think that justice was not done to Kenny and Bailey.
