If you want the bowdlerized happy-sappy version of "Merry Little Christmas" ("hang a shining star upon the highest bough", don't buy this. This is the bittersweet song from the movie "Meet Me in St. Louis" with the original lyrics ("until then we'll have to muddle through, somehow"). The other worthy version is James Taylor's cover.

Judy Garland was the original artist for this song, in a movie, "Meet Me in St. Louis." Not only is her voice perfect for the song, but I love that this recording has the movie version of the lyrics, which are slightly sad. In the movie, her family faces a move to a new location, and the possibility that they will not all be together for Christmas that year. The lyrics of that version are
"Some day soon we all will be together, if the Fates allow.
Until then, we'll have to muddle through, somehow."
The movie was released in 1944, and the song with those lyrics was especially meaningful that Christmas to troops serving far from home in WW2. (That Christmas Day, my own father was retreating from the Germans in the Battle of the Bulge). There have been various versions of the lyrics since then, most commonly these:
"Through the years we all will be together, If the Fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough."
Those revised lyrics just don't have the same poignant feel, and no one else can match Garland's voice.

Can't really say much else - it has always brought a tear to my eye. Makes me think of times when Christmas actually meant something other than how much can you spend. So if you want to listen with songs with a meaning - that aren't purely religious then this and songs like Chestnut Roasting on an Open fire, etc bring back fond memories - this is one to have.

Also, I get tired of waiting for stations to play this and some of the other Christmas songs while suffering through eight versions of Santa Got Run Over By a Reindeer, et al. Sorry folks - but those just drive me crazy.

There are lots and lots of different versions of this classic Christmas song, in all musical styles, some good and some bad, but this original version, as Judy Garland sang it in the movie "Meet Me In St. Louis," is still the best. It's poignant, bittersweet and hopeful, and Garland poured emotion into it gently but powerfully, without overstyling it. It's perfect.

This is a great song, a great Christmas song, from a great Movie (Meet Me In St. Louis) and it is sung by a great lady of song Judy Garland. Unbeatable combo.
