A refreshing tale embracing the self destructive and raw angst portrayed in Larry Clark’s KIDS with the moral dilemmas explored in X-men/Titans and what you end up with is Curt Pire’s graphic novel, YOUTH. Youth is a refreshing exploration of what can happen when young adults haphazardly acquire superpowers at a time in there life when they lack the emotional maturity to grasp either the impact of or the consequences of exercising them without discretion. Proactively gritty and beautifully raw, Youth Season One is addictive.

This is a wild ride of a comic with meta acknowledgments of superheroes, sex, drugs, and rock & roll. The art and coloring are stunning at times, especially when a character is alone. It reminded me of earlier Gregg Araki movies with teenage nihilism, outsider cool, and out-of-control teenage hormones on a rage road trip to deliver one last middle finger to the crappy state of a society that only pretends to care.

This book blends a number of narrative we know into a form that is unique. A great read with characters that you can relate to. In the end the story works because it does capture the turbulence we all remember from out youth.
