Dungeondice Monsters is a version of the board game played by the characters in the Yu-Gi-Oh! animated series. Featuring the same blend of magic, monsters, and strategy that have made the show a hit, this game has some nicely detailed playing pieces, seven in all, five dice (covered with symbols likely to be comprehensible only to Yu-Gi-Oh! fans), and a abacus-style counter to keep score. The only weak element is the flimsy paper game "board" that will scarcely lie flat enough to play on. --David Stoesz

I puchased two startes for myself and my Grandson. We have played the card game for quite some time(I pre-ordered the initial release in english).I enjoy this game for several reasons. The first is the required deck size. You only need ten cards.Secondly is the different aspects you have to be aware of during the game. You have to think defense, and offense, the cool thing is that its not just the cards you have to think about. The dungeon path and how you lay it out is as important as the cards in your deck. The starter allows you to play immediately, but you will absolutely want to get into the advanced game asap. This means you will need to buy more monsters/cards.You will need four beyond the starter deck for each player.Dungeon dice is to the YuGi card game as checkers are to 3-D chess. The dice factor is also another aspect that causes you to think from two more perspectives.I think that children may become bored quickly, without some parental input. After our third duel my seven year old opponent, having been beaten the first three games, caught on to the multi-level thinking and two duels later wiped the floor with me.I would recommend making a playing field out of wood. The paper field is sort of a pain as it is folded in the box and the folds make for a lot of "wandering "of the dungeon paths. While the monsters are all in the card game(the ccg)the more you try to relate it to the ccg,the harder it will be to play. You have to approach this as a new game.Given the cross-over monsters, that can be a bit confusing for young players. We do still play the card game, but I am noticing that we are playing the dice game more and more than we do the card game.If you just hand this to your children most likely they will lose interest quickly,so get yourself a deck too. With some minor instruction you may find what I did, that this game is far more educational than the ccg,and a lot more fun.

Dungeondice Monsters is a VERY fun little game for kids of 6-7 years old and up. It's even fun for "grown ups" like myself. I bought this game as a present for my 6 year old son. Although the rules seemed a bit daunting at first, he understood the basic gameplay with very little explanation from me.
My only real complaint is that the set comes with 6 figures (and an absolutely useless 7th figure - the Monster Lord, which can be replaced with a cardboard token that is also included), while the "advanced" rules say you must have 10 figures per side. This means you have to buy 14 more figures at $5.00 each (although amazon doesn't stock them at the moment for some odd reason). As an added bonus, someone in marketing decided that all figures in the game must be unique. I say, buy two starter sets (six monsters for $20 is quite a bargain) and when the boosters become available, buy them if you want them. To heck with the "all monsters must be unique" rule.
Still and all, the game is fast and fun to play. After a slow first round of feeling our way through the rules, we were able to play three more games inside of a half hour. A real blast for Yu-gi-oh fans and parents looking for a fun little strategy game to play with their kids.

A Kid's Review on May 11, 2003
This board game is really easy to learn and is fast the duel monsters game with the cards takes forever to end the game.the figures don't seem as sturdy, they are bendy but the game is good and the crests on the dices don't wear off on other games some times stuff on the dice wear off.
Like i said this is the best game ever if your into Yu-Gi-oh you'll love this game.they should give you more cards and figures

This is the collectable board game version of the Dungeondice Monsters game that is played on the Yu-Gi-Oh! TV show. It's very different from the card game but is so novel and different from any other type of game that it is sure to be a hit. There is a GameBoy Advance version of this game also, however the rules for the board game are slightly different. This starter set includes 6 monsters, which will allow you and a friend to play a "basic" version of the game (using a smaller playing field). In order to play the "advanced" game (as shown on the TV show) each player must have 10 monsters (with no duplicate monsters, a different rule from the GBA version). You collect additional monsters in monster booster packs (1 in each). You get a small 1" figurine with each monster, and these figurines are very solid and detailed. I recommend each player buy a starter set and 4 boosters so that you can immediately begin playing the advanced version of the game (this is a 2-player only game). If you want to get a basic idea how the game is played, you can watch the 4 "Dungeondice Monsters" episodes of Yu-Gi-Oh!, however it isn't too complicated to learn the game. I haven't seen any Dungeondice Monsters boosters here yet, but they should be coming soon.
I gave this game only 3 stars for durability because the dungeon game board is actually a flimsy piece of glossy paper. Mattel really should have included a sturdy cardboard playing field. Otherwise, the pieces and figures are very durable.
It's been almost a month now and I can't believe there are still no Dungeondice Booster packs available here. Again, you MUST buy 4 boosters for every single starter sold in order to play a "normal" game (and your opponent must have done the same or have 10 boosters with no duplicate monsters). Unless you can find them at a store then don't buy this starter set here.
