Great for security!
Love this thing for securing my accounts. The NFC works, but i have to rub it strangely against my phone for it to work. It’s likely an issue on my end, but the USB works perfectly.

This key has excellent support for FIDO U2F and FIDO2/WebAuthn. Compared with yubico's 5 series, this key does NOT support a bunch of security protocols used INSIDE large corporations; but for most normal users who want to securely login web services, FIDO U2F and FIDO2/Webauthn are more than enough. Once the FIDO2 PIN is set using YubiKey Manager (or win10 settings), the key can added to websites which support FIDO/FIDO2 protocols. The passwordless login experience with Microsoft is just awesome (No username, no password, no authenticator, just plug in the key and enter the key's PIN).

However, there are several things that you should know before buying:
1. The websites supporting FIDO U2F or FIDO2/Webauthn are VERY LIMITED. DO NOT believe the list provided by yubico. To know if your service supports security keys, log in yourself and try to find the security option under 2 factor authentication under account security. If there is none, you probably won't be able to use this key directly on that website. Currently, most large tech companies do provide this option, but not the smaller ones.

2. Avoid the Yubico Authenticator. I don't even know if this security key series will work with yubico's authenticator. Even if it does, I will never touch it. This software is designed for services with only TOTP not FIDO. It is basically a TOTP authentication app, but you need to use the key to unlock it. Therefore the key isn't used directly on the web service. You need to enter credentials on your web service -> find yubikey when required TOTP -> switch to yubico authenticator and unlock it -> copy TOTP -> switch back to web and login. Trust me - this is NOT a great tradeoff between convenience and security. If your service only support traditional TOTP 2FA, try find an authenticator app that synchronizes over multiple platforms and can be unlocked using on-board biometics. You will login much faster without the key on those web services.

3. Be cautious what 'key' you are adding to services. If you enabled Windows Hello, services with the newest WebAuthn protocols may try to add Win Hello as a security 'key' instead of your yubikey. You normally won't want this since yubikey is much more portable and can be used on different machines. The solution is simple: Watch carefully and click 'Cancel' if the website wants to pair with Win Hello and your will be prompted again to access yubikey.

That being said, this key has excellent compatibility and plug-n-play on most systems. If you are sure your services support FIDO/FIDO2 and you only need a key for the web, this key is exactly what you need. However, if you completelyyubikey can completely substitute TOTP - that's not going to happen any soon. For best practice, I suggest password manager + auth app + security key. Prioritize security key > TOTP > SMS OTP > password only.

Have fun.

So far, NFC does not work with a Google Pixel XL. I have contacted Yubico directly and will update this review as this progresses. Yubico suggested installing an NFC reader app to test. It failed but my Google Titan didn't. I tried several other NFC reader apps and the Titan worked with all of them. The Yubico did not. Stay tuned.

Update: 1/24/2019 - Contacting Yubico via email was a good idea. They asked for a picture of my key and the Amazon transaction number. No I did not get a knock-off. As per Yubico's advice I am returning the item for a replacement. I really want this to work because the price is right, it's flat and can fit in my wallet (not typical wallet) and will handle laptop (USB) and cell phone (NFC) use. I should get the replacement in 2 days. Stay tuned...
1/26/19 Update: From the day I bought this to today, people from Yubico (not just one employee) sent me emails. Received a new one today and it worked. In fact, it worked without removing it from its plastic container. I have a back and side protector with magnets in the back and still, no problem. Thanks to the Yubico folks I can give this 5 stars. Happy camper here!
2/9/2019 update: One final note. Once I contacted Yubico (directly) and gave them my Amazon transaction number, I was receiving emails from multiple people at Yubico. Responses were fairly quick and helpful. I'm a real fan of a combo USB/NFC key because it will work on any device; desktop or mobile. I'm adding a USB cover of my own to cover the USB contacts just as a precaution against any static charges that might hit it during these cold months.

Besides backup codes , and phone number authentication, this replaces them well insuring that I can only login to my account as prompted for a security key after the password. Works great for identity protection.

There are shortcomings in FIDO U2F authentication, but they are with vendors who have failed to implement it fully, like Microsoft.

My experience so far:
1) works great for Google accounts in Chrome, Chromium-based browsers, and Firefox. It also works on Chrome on my Galaxy S9+. The NFC works fine if I log into an account thru Chrome on my phone, but since I use apps for those accounts, this is not something I'll ever do. So I probably could've done without the NFC. There's no benefit for me at this point.

2) Microsoft accounts (e.g., Outlook.com) -- not so much. MS is slow on the uptake, so there are a few issues that make it pretty well useless for them:
- they only support these keys with Edge, a browser that hardly anyone in the real world actually uses. If you use Chrome or Firefox, authentication automatically falls back to other 2FA methods. Maybe now that they are switching Edge to Chromium-based, this issue will go away.
- they don't allow you to remove SMS & other weaker 2FA methods from your account like Google does, and it's only as good as your weakest link.
- Edge on Android doesn't support NFC, so no browser actually works on Android.

So if you're looking to this to lock down your MS accounts, wait until MS provides better support for FIDO U2F. It's just not there yet. Not Yubico's fault.

The one thing I was unsure about -- would I have to use it on accounts that are already on my phone? Turns out no, so nothing has changed with my phone.

I wanted a more secure login than 2FA. (And using this with an ID site simplified Social Security logins.) The key works fine, blinking to alert me to press to login. I run Linux, so I didn't encounter any Windows and Yubikey issues.
Yubikey even persuaded me which key organizer to get!
