About Yukio Mishima
Yukio Mishima (三島 由紀夫 Mishima Yukio?) is the pen name of Kimitake Hiraoka (平岡 公威 Hiraoka Kimitake?, January 14, 1925 – November 25, 1970), a Japanese author, poet, playwright, actor, and film director. Mishima is considered one of the most important Japanese authors of the 20th century. He was considered for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1968 but the award went to his fellow countryman Yasunari Kawabata. His works include the novels Confessions of a Mask and The Temple of the Golden Pavilion, and the autobiographical essay Sun and Steel. His avant-garde work displayed a blending of modern and traditional aesthetics that broke cultural boundaries, with a focus on sexuality, death, and political change. Mishima was active as a nationalist and founded his own right-wing militia. He is remembered for his ritual suicide by seppuku after a failed coup d'état attempt, known as the "Mishima Incident".
The Mishima Prize was established in 1988 to honor his life and works.

In this fascinating document, one of Japan's best known-and controversial-writers created what might be termed a new literary form. It is new because it combines elements of many existing types of writing, yet in the end fits into none of them.

It is a piece of literature that is as carefully fashioned as Mishima's novels, and at the same time provides an indispensable key to the understanding of them as art.
The road Mishima took to salvation is a highly personal one. Yet here, ultimately, one detects the unmistakable tones of a self transcending the particular and attaining to a poetic vision of the universal. The book is therefore a moving document, and is highly significant as a pointer to the future development of one of the most interesting novelists of modern times.

Una de las muchas razones por las que este libro fue tan polémico para su época, aunque me parece que aún sigue siendo polémico es porque Koo-chan narra el descubrimiento de su sexualidad, sin tapujos y a detalle, otra de las razones es porque el protagonista descubre sus gustos homosexuales, y fantasías sexuales, gusto por la sangre y la muerte.
Esta novela es ambientada en el último período de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, en Japón. Como todos sabemos la cultura japonesa a pesar de que me parece hermosa, es una cultura muy estricta en cuanto a sus valores y cuestiones morales. Es por esto, quizá, otra de las razones por la que es uno de los libros más vendidos en Japón. De la novela se dice que es una autobiografía de Yukio Mishima, por otro lado también defiendo que a pesar de que el mismo Mishima dijo que es una autobiografía, es una de las novelas más espléndidas que he leído y donde se nota de forma muy prolija el talento del autor. Lo más curioso es que este libro no me pareció que fue escrito de una forma complicada y que Mishima intentó escribir todo el libro de forma confusa para quien lo leyera. Por el contrario, es un libro que se debe leer con cuidado, pero que logra entenderse.
