The card drafting in Sylvion is something I'd like to see (or even implement) in solo variations on existing card drafting games. It's a great way to select cards while hoping that a particular set of cards won't be taken before you can get to them, sort of a mix between an even more evil Coloretto and 7 Wonders: Duel.
Of the Oniverse games, Sylvion could have benefited the most from having english text on the cards (something I say goes also for the Oniverse expansion in Onirim), in particular for the extraordinary feat cards in the expansion in Extraordinary Feats and Betrayal. Still, it's quite a fun game, since the animals have such a variety of power and the fire elementals comprising the Ravage are so relentless.
Be warned: one easy game doesn't mean you'll win the others so easily.
But I am a person with limited time and I tend to appreciate shorter games that takes less time to setup, shuffle, put the cards back into the box, however, Sylvion is a game that takes about 30 minutes (40~60 minutes if played with all the expansions, which are already included in the game) to play, and not just that, Sylvion is also a game that takes up a lot of space to play too. So if the above characteristics of the game Sylvion concerns you, then Onirim might be a better fit for you, but overall game play/design quality ALONE, Sylvion clearly is the better (but not by a whole lot) game in my opinion and experience. So yeah, you should definitely check this game out if you are into single player games, IF you don't mind the amount of time it takes to play considering it's a filler game.
I am slightly lowering the review from 5 to 4.5 stars because of the first expansion (the second expansion is a great addition to the main game, and I don't have any complains against it), because the last 4 "Extraordinary Feats" cards out of 8 from the first expansion are just plain useless. When you do end up drafting these cards, instead of expanding options, they only unnecessarily over-complicates the game, and the problem is because the main game forces you to stay alive and prepare to defend the next wave of elemental attacks, but these 'alternative victory condition' cards will give you like another completely different objective to fulfill on top of all the tension going on, which can be interesting in theory (and in few very rare cases, are), but for the most of time these cards are just plain useless. Of course, you could just take away all (or just the 4 'alternative victory condition' cards, plus additional 4 betrayal cards, for total of 8 cards out of 16 cards from the first expansion) the cards from the first expansion, the game still remains a brilliant game, but it is a bit disappointing that Sylvion could have been a more complete game, if all the cards in the box could have been able to utilized equally.
And then something "clicked." The strategy on this is complicated but a blast. Figuring all the ways you can save the forest and all the things that can go wrong makes for a really challenging game. Even the pre-game where you draw for your cards is fun as you try to think about which cards are the most important in defending the forest.
It took a while but sticking through the learning curve has made for a really fun and challenging game.
The cards have held up really well and they have wonderful drawings; the box itself is a work of art.
