From the Manufacturer
In Big Box, players will find the basic game and nine expansions. This box is the gaming passport for Carcassonne fans old and new. The expansions can all be combined. Each of them is identified with a specific icon, making it easy to create the combinations you want to play, when you want to play them.

The 4 star instead of a 5 is for the Big Box itself because it doesn't come with the River, that would have made it perfect. Thankfully, reading all the other expansion details, I realized Expansion 6 - Count, King and Robber, comes with the River, so we went ahead and bought that as well.
Also, while the box it came in is nice and sturdy (for the price you pay, it's expected), the plastic insert where you store the various tiles is a bit thin, a few of the inner corners in the plastic broke. I took the insert out and reinforced it with electrical tape on all the corners.
Inns and Cathedrals: One of my favorite expansions. It's always great to mess with your opponents and introduce the city cathedral pieces that make it almost impossible for them to finish their city. The big meeple has one me a few games as well.
Traders and Builders: By far my favorite expansion. The builder makes games go quicker with the ability to draw an extra tile when adding to the feature he is present on.
Admittedly, we don't play with the smaller expansions that are included in this set, but should we ever decide to, they don't add much extra time or complexity to the game.
I won't go in depth about how the game is played (watch youtube) but will briefly state that in this game players take turns laying down tiles and "meeples" in an effort to score points by completing cities, roads, farms, and monasteries.
I enjoy playing the basic game as well as the expansions, and mixing the expansions up. There is a lot of replay value in this game, and even more with this particular packaging of expansions.
You take turns drawing a map tile that has a combination of town, farmland, and road pictures on the edges and match them up to anywhere on the board that has similar edges, and can choose to occupy some part of that tile with a "Meeple" (little wooden piece). You gain points depending on your meeple's job (whether he be a Thief on the roads, a Knight in a town, or a simple Famer in the fields), and play until all pieces run out. It's partially strategy (where will I place this tile, and will I try to occupy it?) and partially luck (I really need a tile with a town, two roads and grassland!).
Fun for 2-4 players, and this Big Box comes with a few expansions for those who want a bit of flavor on top of the base game.
