For the price this is a pretty good lighter. I am a pipe smoker so mine gets used a lot and don't expect any lighter to last forever. I get about a year of use before the spark cam gives out. That is longer than I was getting out of some much more expensive lighters. In fact, the hinge on a Zippo case usually wears out before the second Z-plus dies.

As with any torch lighter a little maintenance will keep it alive longer. First off, the little orifices tend to clog over time. If it lights at all the flame separates from the orifice plate and becomes unstable. A little cotton wrapped around a toothpick and dipped in alcohol will soften the crud and a quick blast of compressed air clears it right up. Second, air accumulates in the fuel tank restricting how much gas it will hold and making it harder to light. Vent the lighter every 3 or 4 fills. Add just a little butane then use a small object to depress the filler valve until the hiss stops then fill normally. Third, if it refuses to light, watch the spark. 90% of the time the problem is crud build up at the base of the electrode or the insulation on the electrode has broken down allowing the spark to jump to the side rather than to the center of the orifices. Clean the lighter with some alcohol. If that doesn't work, using a gem clip or small wire as an applicator, apply a small drop of liquid electrical tape to the base of the electrode and let it dry. I have extended the life of my Z-plus for several months that way.

First off, i did not receive the product pictured. Apparently two companies make "Z-Plus" zippo inserts, Blazer (the real one) and the one that made mine, vertigo (integral style). The logos are the same, they look identical except boxed differently, but mine has problems, so i don't know if the quality is the same. Mine will not consistently light or stay lit. it won't light at all if the control is set below full on. it doesn't give a consistent ignition spark, and even when it does spark the lighter doesn't light every time. then even when you get a light it usually goes out immediately or after a few seconds. For about a week it would stay lit long enough to light your average cigar. oh well $10 down the drain. i know this is not the usual for the Blazer products but i didn't receive blazer. integral style will charge me the same amount for a warranty repair as i paid for the lighter which is absurd.
Make sure you buy the blazer model, don't get ripped off like i did

I just received my z-plus insert and had the same problem many others are having i.e. lights for a second or even less and goes out. Tried emptying the lighter and refilling with no luck. After fiddling for a while I noticed that the lighter worked fine out of the zippo case but not when inserted. Turns out the little adjustment screw on the bottom protrudes further than the base of the lighter and just a slight pressure on the screw shuts down the flame. I used a 3/16' diameter flat punch and dimpled the bottom of the lighter so that it doesn't hit the screw. All is well now - at least with the lighter.

This is a terrible product. It looks okay, but the functional aspect is very poor. With just slight use, it stopped igniting (like many cheap piezo electric ignitors) and is unrepairable. Look elsewhere. Get one of the flashlight inserts if you want to keep using your old Zippo case but don't want a fluid lighter any more.

.
I bought one of these for a Zippo lighter. Fits snugly but easily in the Zippo, looks for all the world like the original insert. Holds quite a bit of butane and the adjustable flame is just right for lighting cigars. For the first few months it worked like a champ and I was pleased with my choice.

However, the quartz ignition system needs some work. Now, after about a year, mine has reached the point where I have to press it 7 or 8 times before it will generate a spark. Its reliability has dropped to practically zero. Not good, in my opinion.

This is a super good idea that is hobbled by an unreliable sparking system. Makes it useless for me.

------
Update (3/10/2012): Wouldn't you know it? A day after I post a tepid review here, complaining about the sparking system, the "Electro Quartz Ignition" system gives up the ghost. No amount of clicking or pressing or cursing will get it to spark. I know nothing lasts forever and in truth I have used it daily for about a year, so I guess I got my money's worth out of it. Now off to find a reliable replacement. At least I kept the original Zippo insert.

Update (3/14/2012): Good thing I was lazy and didn't actively hunt for a replacement as this one has risen from the grave. It's back to the 7-or-8-clicks-before-it-lights stage. No matter. This latest state only reinforces my opinion that's its reliability will not last more than a year. I'll keep it but I can't in good conscience recommend it.

I thought this would be a neat device to use with my lighter so that I could use butane. I could see that it was full or at least had fuel and it would not light very often. Sometimes it would only light if I held it sideways. Not impressed. Maybe just a bad one? Possibly. But I went for the return and received a quick refund!
