It's works, the characters are not heros per say, but within their little group each one in turn takes the lead.
Very well written, nice ending, would have like a second story but it was still a little sad. Truly enjoyed it.
This is very much a chick book; more about thoughts and feelings and relationships and emotions and self-discovery set against a Zombie Apocalypse (ZA) than it is about the actual ZA, which feels more like a painted back-drop than a fully drawn integral part of the story.
The good: It's well written and well edited, the dialog's not bad and there's tons of character development.
The somewhat less good: The zombies don't show up for the first 20% of the book, and they don't really directly feature all that much in the main stream of the storyline - they're more a plot device and an afterthought than they are anything else. The author could have used Nazis or Martians instead of zombies and the bulk of the book would not have been substantially different.
The little bit of action is okay - not great, but not bad either. The actual ZA is not bad as such, but it feels thin and off hand-ish and insufficiently detailed and developed.
Bottom line, short version: For what it is - not bad, worth a look.
