    ZAGG Slim Book Reviews

"The keyboard on the Zagg Slim Book is one of the best we've tested on a keyboard case so far. It has excellent, well-spaced, solid keys that are all in their rightful, familiar place, and they have springy feedback and satisfying travel." -- PC Mag Editor's Choice Award.

Nice looking, lightweight, and spacious keyboard, but hard to open
    4 Stars
Nice looking, lightweight, and spacious keyboard, but hard to open
I am a writer and wanted a keyboard case for my iPad mini to take on trips instead of my MacBook Pro. I am pleased with this keyboard because it is extremely lightweight and has good key spacing. I'm not sure how much heavy duty writing I will get done, but that is more a function of the tiny iPad screen than the keyboard. The vertical reach of the keys is almost identical to that of the keyboard on my MacBook Pro (see pictures). The horizontal spacing is slightly more cramped than my laptop, but still more generous than several other iPad mini keyboards that I have looked at. It is very easy to type on (I am typing this review on it now), but have noticed I have to type slightly harder than I would on my MacBook -- I'm sure I will adjust to this after more time. The keyboard is also very nice to look at - it is made of the same aluminum material as my macbook pro, which is also why it is so lightweight. With the iPad mini installed, the whole thing weighs in at 1.5 pounds (compared to my 4.5 pound macbook) and is small enough to fit easily in my purse. I also like the cover that goes on the back of the iPad. It is a nice material that is not too slippery in my hand, and will protect the back of my iPad mini from scratches when it is bumping around in my bag. I wear hand lotion, and fingerprints are noticeable, but come off pretty easily. I very much like that I can remove the keyboard part and still have a protected iPad -- the magnets are strong but not too much, so taking the ipad off the keyboard is easy enough. I much prefer to hold my iPad in my hand without a keyboard when reading and must admit that the ability to have it both ways (protected ipad PLUS keyboard when I want it) sold me on this keyboard. Now for the bad - I didn't give the case 5 stars mostly because, as others have stated, the hinge is pretty tight. It makes opening the case difficult, even with two hands. When trying to adjust it from the "movie-viewing position," I have accidentally popped the iPad out of the hinge twice with enough force that it sprung from my hands and to the ground. Fortunately I was sitting both times, so it didn't have far to fall, or else I may have damaged my screen. I am admittedly cautious now, but its not enough to make me hate the thing entirely. The second strike against it is that it doesn't open quite as far as I would like. I find myself wishing that it would open just another 2 or 3 degrees when sitting at my desk typing. Note that I am using a iPad mini, and this may not be an issue for the full-sized iPad air. I have solved this issue by putting a thin notepad under my keyboard when I know I'll be typing for a long time.Overall, I think I will get a lot of use out of this keyboard and would recommend it to anyone interested in a nice-looking, functional, and lightweight keyboard case to turn their iPad mini into a miniature workstation!
