Upon opening the package I was surprised because the stitching and seamwork seem almost "cheap". The material, however, is durable, and the sole hasn't shown much wear since I have worn them in the yard and around the house. I would prefer to go barefoot so this is very near the same feeling. I don't think that these shoes would be viable options for running because the sole is extremely thin.
These shoes wash well but I use them more as a pair of slippers than a minimalistic athletic set of footwear. In the future I will probably pony up and spend the extra amount of money on another set of Vibrams.
I have been wearing them for about a month now nearly all day every day. They're so comfortable and so unobtrusive that I've crawled into bed a few times with them on and didn't even think about it! I haven't had any issues at all about walking on various terrains. They provide exactly as much protection as you need to not get hurt or be bothered by walking on acorns, rocks, or whatever without taking away the feeling of being practically barefoot. I give them 4 stars though because I'm disappointed that the lycra touches the ground on all sides and after the month of wearing them a little rip has formed in the toe. I have done my share of walking on sidewalks, indoors, outdoors, and everywhere in between, but I was definitely hoping they'd last a little longer. I sew, so I'll be reinforcing the toe myself, but it'd be nice if they were more durable.
I hear ZemGear is coming out with a running shoe in which the sole will come up and around so the lycra does NOT touch the ground. I'm definitely in line for those! I've read other reviews of people complaining about the seams being uncomfortable. When I first tried them on, the heel seem was much narrower than my heel (I have wide feet all around) and I was concerned I'd have a similar experience, but I found that the more I wore them the softer the seems got. They haven't bothered me since that first day. I even wore these to Warrior Dash through mud, water, sand, and crazy obstacles and they held up exceptionally well. The small rip in the toe turned into a slightly larger one, but no other wear and tear at all! Everyone else had to throw away their shoes after the race and I just through mine in the wash! I wasn't bogged down my lots of mud in my shoes either!
Overall, I recommend these shoes for anyone wanting to live a "barefoot" lifestyle. I think these are perfect for your every day use and the options of styles and colors allow you to match your wardrobe. I've only had a couple people in the last month comment on them, so I wouldn't worry about too many people asking if you're just wearing socks *lol*. I'd like to try the ninja toe shoes next...in aqua! Thanks ZemGear! (hurry up with the running shoe would ya?!)
I can't imagine doing anything rigorous (like running) in them. I think they would fall apart. The top is a stretchy lycra/spandex type material and the bottoms (soles) are a sheet of flexible plastic.
Although, around the house was my primary purpose for these, I hoped to be able to use them at the beach (as in "playa") as well. I haven't yet, but I think these would be fine beach shoes. Too tight for sand to get into, and mostly waterproof.
