' Ability to attach a quick release plate. This tripod include a quick release plate. The release plate is made out of metal and is sturdy with a heavy duty construction. Quick plate tightening mechanism can be tightened by a penny.
' Lightweight. This tripod weighs 3 pounds 1 oz (this weight include the tripod and the ball head). This tripod is heavy enough to withstand a gust of wind yet light enough to carry around without much trouble.
' Quick release legs. This tripod does not have quick release lock for tripod legs. Each collapsible leg is made out of 4 sections and is released by twist locking mechanism. The twist lock mechanism is slow compared to quick release locks, but it holds well.
' Ability to support a digital SLR with 300 zoom lens. This tripod handles my Canon DSR camera with 300 zoom lens without a problem. It is rated to support 39.5 pounds, way more than I will ever need.
' Flexible ball head or ability to mount any ball head. This tripod comes with a nice ball head and can accept any other standard ball head. The panning and tilting is smooth.
The ballhead has three adjustment knobs.
' Pan knob is a small knob at the bottom.
' Ball knob is the medium sized knob. Using it I can position to ball to align with a 90-degree slot for vertical orientation.
' Small knob at the top controls the quick release plate.
This tripod came with a couple of extras:
' Comes with a padded carrying case. Most of my tripod cases are just heavy duty nylon, this one actually has thin padding all around.
' It comes with a spare bag to store the ball head. Since I already have another ball head I find a storage bag useful to store the one I am not using.
Tripod's maximum height is 65.5", minimum height is 22". When it is collapsed its size is 19".
This tripod can be converted into a monopod using a provided hex key. The conversion is not fast as it requires working with a number of screws and washers. It is not something I would do on the road as it is easy to loose a washer or a screw. Some of the screws were extremely tight the first time I unscrewed them.
This is a nice sturdy tripod that is not too heavy!
This tripod is provided by Zomei.
Ali Julia review
I have amended my original negative review. After approximately 5 months (and having 2 items sent to me that didn't help the problem at all), in dealing with this defective twist lock thing, the Zomei people finally were able to understand my problem. I received today a new (large) twist lock (with the rubber band in it as it should have been) and now, the leg stays on!! I felt that it was only fair, since they did do their part in trying to address my problem.
* 4.7.2016 - Update of Review * ZoMei did contact me via email, and sent me 3 feet to try and fix the problem. However, this is not what caused the leg to fall off (I have sent them a photo). They suggested that I put the rubber "band" back on, which I do not have, or I would have already done so. I still cannot use the tripod.
The big deal breaker for me was the fluid head (i'm likly going to return it because of this.)
The fluid head works great under controlled environmental conditions (like indoors), but it does not survive changes well. I just got back from a trip out west (western united states - Grand canyon and surrounding desert and canyoon areas [excellent vistas and spectacular photo opportunities]) and it worked great at first, but the daily changes in altitude, temperature, barametric pressure, etc... were just too much for it. it started to leak fluid on the third day. it still kind of worked afterwards, but never as good as when it was new. it wasnt smooth anymore and kind of felt like a friction swivel there after. I know how fluid heads work and I made sure to keep the horizontal axis loose while traveling so as to give it some room to expand, but I think the issue is that its a fixed fluid pressure inside the head and you cant adjust it directly. With other fluid heads you would be able to release pressure and allow for expansion, but not with this one. The fliud motion was a big selling point for me. I can get another tripod with the clamps for a bit less than this and get a better fluid head for it separrately. I really need a travel tripod to survive a diverse range of travel. I have many other trips planned this comming year in much more rapidly changing conditions. the trip west was a test for this to see if it could meet my needs. I really like all the features this thing came with but in the end I'll settle for less features and more robustness on the basics.
