A few weeks later, I'm tolerating the draw strings and I've gotten more used to the phone placement. I like the shorter shorts vs. the Ultra, the padding is WAY better than the current ultra, and overall I would buy another. Just wish the side pocket was back a bit- the phone would then be in the ideal spot. So- yes - Performance is a good value, especially when Ultra sucks now. I have a couple of pair of vintage Ultra that I wear only on special occasions. Like triathlon dates. :)
my profile: not a hardcore Triathlete - dwell in the bottom rungs of local sprints and similarly shorter Tri/aquabike events
1-2 X/week swimmer year round - wear these at least once a week, more during tri season
2-3x/Week Runner (tri season only- I hate running)
1-2x/week Bike - More during tri season, wear these at least once a week.
last pair lasted a little over a year with that schedule. use that info however you want.
They fit as expected. At 5'11" 165 lbs with a 31/32 waist the Medium fits snugly but isn't constricting. While the fabric has loosened slightly over the past two months the fit is still good, and the cuffs are still snug at the thighs (unlike my bike shorts).
The shorts are very comfortable when running -- I don't notice the pad at all. The pad is about as comfortable as a normal chamois on the bike, though I typically don't experience saddle soreness for rides under two hours even in running shorts. Your mileage may vary. Due to the snug fit I have had no problems with chafing when running or cycling.
The pockets work well, and I have comfortably carried GU and Shot Blocks in them when running. I'm somewhat concerned about items falling out when cycling since the pockets are located at the hip and will flex as you pedal, so I usually keep nutrition in a jersey pocket.
2 things that I'm worried about. First - the padding is pretty thin, almost just like a piece of a fleece jacket. Fine for me as I'm doing a Sprint, but for a longer bike ride it may not be sufficient. Also read that maybe you shouldn't use them in a chlorine pool "for maximum lifespan." Not sure how you are supposed to train otherwise.
