For those wondering, I was able to use this with Project Fi with no changes. Just put in my data only card and it just worked!
For Linux if it is not recognized, just load the usbnet module and configure it as a nic, done! I do have the modeswitch program installed to flip it from looking like a cdrom with windows software and more recent udev rules. It took me some tinkering to see that it showed as a nic rather than a usbserial device. T-Mobile's own documentation hints at what I found as well.
It did not come with a card and needs a mini sim so I got a sim starter kit in two hours via PrimeNow and switched my data account to it by calling the friendly T-Mobile staff. The new sims can be full sized, punched out to mini sim or punched out even further to micro sim.
I will be testing this on OpnSense which is BSD based rather than Linux based. So far as I know, it also has usb modeswitch to flip the modem to nic mode.
