From the Manufacturer
ZVOX SoundBase 580 Single Cabinet Surround Sound System
Now you can get high-performance room-filling home theater sound without a room full of speakers. The ZVOX SoundBase 580 is a complete surround sound system--including two powered subwoofers--all in one cabinet. Just place the 580 on a piece of furniture, place your flat-panel TV on top of the system, connect one wire, and you've installed a great sounding home theater system in under 10 minutes. The sound quality of the ZVOX 580 is comparable to that of much more expensive multi-speaker systems. It includes five high-performance speakers and dual 6.5" powered subwoofers for window-rattling bass. The ZVOX PhaseCue virtual surround sound system creates three-dimensional sound without the need for multiple speakers throughout the room. Movies come to life with vibrant, realistic, high-impact sound. Music sounds accurate and natural. And vocals on TV shows come through with incredible clarity.
The most important feature for any home theater system is high quality sound. The 580 uses a new amplifier design with extremely accurate frequency response and a warm, natural sound with surprisingly powerful bass. It features dual 6.5" powered subwoofers in a spacious cabinet (equal in interior volume to a 14" x 14" x 14" subwoofer box). The result is accurate, window-rattling bass down to 34Hz. No other all-in-one home theater system even comes close.
PhaseCue Virtual Surround Sound
The 580 uses ZVOX's proprietary PhaseCue virtual surround system to give you rich, three-dimensional sound with movies or music. With music, PhaseCue creates a very wide soundstage--it literally sounds like you are listening to speakers eight feet apart from each other. When listening to a good movie, the soundtrack will envelop you, putting you in the middle of the action.
PhaseCue uses exclusive technology "fools the ear" into believing that sound is coming from a variety of sources throughout the room. The benefits of PhaseCue vary greatly based on program material. Live music and well-recorded modern movie soundtracks will deliver rich, three-dimensional sound, pulling the sound out from the speakers and into the room to literally surround the listener. While no virtual surround system will give you the exact surround effects of a good 5.1 system, the ZVOX 580 does a remarkable job.
The 580 uses a highly-efficient Class D digital amplifier. Even playing at quite loud volumes, it usually uses less than 10 watts of total power. And standby power usage tends to hover around 0.1 watts, making it one of the "greenest" audio systems ever made. The 580 is Energy Star qualified.
Setting A New Standard For Vocal Clarity
ZVOX systems are known for their remarkable vocal clarity--even during sports broadcasts where crowd noise drowns out the announcers, or movies where surround sound effect make voices hard to hear. the Dialog Emphasis (DE) feature mimics the functions of a hearing aid for incredibly clarity. No other speaker system provides such an easy-to-use and effective method for improving the intelligibility of television dialog.
Uses Your Remote Control
Our SoundBase systems can be programmed to respond to your remote control. The illuminated display walks you through a less-than-a-minute programming cycle. Then your TV remote...or cable box remote...or satellite receiver remote...or ANY remote...can control volume, mute, power and input functions of the ZVOX system.
Taming Loud Commercials
If you've ever been blasted out of your chair by a too-loud commercial, or by a cable channel that's twice as loud as another channel, you'll love the new Output Leveling (OL) feature on the ZVOX 580. Just push the "OL" button and a sophisticated compression system takes over, making soft sounds louder and loud sounds softer, so there are fewer jarring moments when switching channels or when commercials come on.
The 580 features a four-digit display located behind the speaker grille that shows the current setting for volume, bass, treble and PhaseCue (virtual surround)--and also shows when you have engaged the Mute, Output Leveling (OL) or Dialog Emphasis (DE) features. A few seconds after you stop using your remote (or front panel) controls, the display disappears completely.
Connect Your iPod and Other Devices
The 580 has two analog audio inputs, one optical digital input, and one coaxial digital input, plus a front-panel 3.5mm analog stereo input for convenient connection of your iPod or other portable audio device. Any specific input can be selected using either the remote control or the slim-line module below the speaker grille.
Wood (MDF) Cabinet With Hand-Lacquered Side Panels
The 580 features a hand-built cabinet of MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) with beautiful hand-lacquered high-gloss end panels. Its low-profile design blends perfectly with flat-panel TVs. Most people don't even notice the ZVOX 580 until they hear it.
What's in the Box?
ZVOX Z-base 580, 1 stereo RCA to stereo RCA connecting cable, multifunction remote control with programming instruction sheet, power cord, one-sheet safety instructions, operations manual, Quick Start guide.

- If a TV is connected to an off-air HDTV antenna or to an HD cable TV feed without a cable box, a sound system connected to the TV's digital audio output may require a Dolby Labs license. The analog audio output of a TV will always work, if present.
- These are guidelines. Confirm your TV base fits within the width and depth of the top of the ZVOX Audio system. It is not necessary to place a TV on top of a ZVOX Audio system. A ZVOX Audio system sounds excellent placed near a TV. Allow for a 1.75" space behind the ZVOX system for rear panel connections.

The sound from the TV in my bedroom was so bad to my ears, I could not even watch the news in bed. Wide screen TVs are getting smaller and less expensive, so something has to give. THE SOUND. I needed an answer and quick. I first started looking for a pair of powered speakers, but could not find something that sounded good and would turn on automatically when the TV was powered up and would shut down when it was off. Sure there were some solutions like the Tannoy powered speakers, but the cost was very high. I could also get an receiver and some traditional speakers and have good sound that way. But that was complex and took up to much room. I started to feel the sound I wanted was still far off and I was starting to blow the budget. Then I saw this ad in Stereophile Magazine and there was hope!
Here was my criteria:
- Less than $500
- Easy enough for my wife to use
- Low profile
- REALLY GOOD SOUND - remember the audiophile part?
- Did not stay powered up all the time
The ZVOX 580 seemed to fit the criteria so I ordered one from Amazon to try it out. It came in two days in a large banged up box, but the ZBOX was in perfect shape. It took about 10 minutes for me to place it under the Panasonic HDTV, although the unit did not include the SPDIF fiber cable. So I hooked up my iPad and listened to some music.
It sounded nice, well balanced, very good extension, good dynamics and a good soundstage. While listening to music, the sound stage did not extend far beyond the edge of the box. If you have listened to a Bose Wave radio, it sounds MUCH better than that. In fact, I would recommend this as a nice low cost hifi system for anyone. After all it has two analog inputs, two digital inputs on the back and an additional input on the front. The rear inputs are switchable from the front or the remote. For less than $500 this would be a hard system to beat as a stereo. One complaint, the high end is a little directional. As you move your head off axis, the sound changes in the high end. Going up or down, or hard left or right, there is a drop off in direct high end frequency response. My guess, is the speakers used to produce the high end are full range cone type and not dedicated tweeters. I will say, because the apparent lack of a crossover in the critical music frequencies (my guess is the crossover is close to 200 HZ) the sound is very nice with little or no phase error. After it playing it for a while, it even sounded better. If this were a table top stereo, it would be among the best available. Yes MUCH better than the Bose and better than both B&W systems. I may have to get one of these for my office.
After a trip to Radio Shack for a fiber cable I was ready for video. The video sound is very good. On content with surround information the soundstage does get wide and can even give you a bit of a 3D feeling. However, it is not close to a real 5.1, 7.1 or even 4.1 system. That being said, for the money and size, it is pretty remarkable. Dialog is quite good, bass is extended and tight and the highs are crystal clear with none of the usual shimmer you get in low cost solutions. My bedroom is large, and it easily fills the room with sound. The bass is pretty impressive without being boomy, however it will not shake you to the bone. The system will learn your remote so it will come on with your TV and turn off when you power off your TV. It will even shut off after inactivity. I love saving power and it passes the "easy for my wife to use"
1. You need to be in front of this thing for it to sound its best. It sounds fine off axis, but the sound is BEST when you are in front. Not a problem when listening to the TV because you will be sitting where you need to be. The thing is because it sounds is so good, I use it as the stereo in our bedroom and I can tell when I move off axis, it is just not as clear.
2. When changing the volumes, it feels like there are 3 db steps and the taper seems to be linear, not an audio taper. So at lower levels say below 12, I find myself wanting to use a volume of 10.5 rather than 10 or 11. There is just too much of a difference between the levels for me. The volume needs to move in smaller increments.
Looks good, well designed and the remote is easy to use. However, you may not need it once you get it setup because it works with the TV remote and the front panel controls are easy to access. it has that nice "American" sound. You know that kind of sound that Henri Kloss made famous. It does feature bass/treble adjustments, compression (sound leveling), dialog enhancement and 3D enhancer on the remote. I left it flat, no need to adjust the bass or treble. I turned on the sound leveling to not to bother the kids with loud parts of the broadcast and keep the volume of the ads down. I keep the 3D enhance on 2 and left off the dialog enhancer. You can't use the dialog enhancer and the 3D magic at the same time anyway.
Easy to setup. Looks nice, SOUNDS REAL GOOD (not audiophile), plays loud and is well worth the $500. If you are looking for better sound than the usual sound bar/plastic sub combo and need something easy for your wife to use - this is your answer.
The ZVOX 580 is excellent for the short duration that it works. The problem is that it is unreliable and doesn't last long.
1) The sound quality is very good. Not as good as the Speakercraft CS3, but significantly better than the Bose Solo. Bass is decent for a TV sound system.
2) It performs well at a range of volumes.
3) The display is fantastic - very smart way to place it.
4) The way it integrates with you existing remote is genius. It basically memorizes the power and volume buttons enabling it to switch on and off when you switch the TV on or off. Also if you pause something and the ZVOX goes to sleep, it's no issue because you can use the volume key to wake it up. So there's never an issue of the sound system and the TV remote being out of sync. It really is brilliant.
5) Build quality is very good. It looks nice.
6) Priced right.
HOWEVER - IT TURNED INTO A BRICK AFTER 3 DAYS. I was watching and the thing switched off and wouldn't turn on again. I tried everything but it was dead. I have been using a high quality surge protector/power stabilizer so it can't be related to a power spike.
I did some research and it seems there an uncomfortably high number of these stories with these ZVOX devices. Since it is heavy - 30lbs - I didn't want to take the risk of shipping this back every few months for a warranty repair - especially since the warranty doesn't even cover shipping. So in the end even though I loved the ZVOX for its functionality, I ended up getting the Speakercraft CS3. I just couldnt bring myself to risk owning the ZVOX after the 30 day return period expired.

After setting it up on top of my TV stand which is almost a matching colour, it is hardly noticeable until the sound comes on.
My wife who is novice on these sort of things, asked me where the sound was coming from when she heard but couldn't see the ZVOX under our TV. I also like the elevation it gives to the height of the TV taking into account the fact that the TV stand is rather lower than I would prefer.
I wish the surround feature was noticeable though but in spite of that, I am satisfied and do not regret my purchase.
Setting it up was a breeze - I don't consider what had to be done as set up.
I am satisfied and would consider buying another if I got it at a better price.
This is a big and heavy product 33 lbs., 3 feet wide; 16 inches deep, and 5 inches high. Your tv placed on top will be higher but not unpleasantly so. This is a quality unit and if you want to hear the background sounds like you do in a movie theatre, and want clearer dialogue then this unit works very well. We watched the movie 'The Impossible' last evening and the sounds of the tsunami, the destruction, the flowing water was so realistic it felt like we were there. With dialogue emphasis, every word was clear. This is the best sound I have heard when watching a movie in my home. Got the unit on sale for $399. This was a great price for the quality of the soundbar. If true surround sound isn't your goal, this Zvox unit is well worth serious consideration. I'm keeping mine!
it performed exactly as described in the independent articles i read reviewed on the internet. there is no spectacular surround sound just like it said, but it clears speech up very very well as claimed and cut the volume on commercials. when something performs as claimed not better or worse you have to be happy or learn to make better decisions. jack kooy.
