Yes, it is expensive for an air-cooler. But it really does offer some advantages for that extra expense.

First, the fins and heat pipes are made from Copper. Then it is all nickel-plated to eliminate corrosion that could interfere with metal-to-air heat transfer.

The base is FLAT and polished like a mirror for contact with the CPU. The heat pipes are a special design using a combination of internal sintering and grooving (more info on Zalman's web site) that help conduct heat more rapidly.

The fan is QUIET. I have a pretty quiet case (Antec P183, Cooler Master "Blade Master" fans running at 600rpm), and I cannot hear the Zalman 9900 fan over the case fans unless I manually ramp it up to 1300rpm. In actual usage, it has always stayed at a completely-silent 900rpm.

The fan has what Zalman describes as a "long life bearing". I discovered after purchasing the 9900MAX that the "9900NT" model shares nearly identical specifications, but has a ball-bearing fan (and no LED). With that knowledge, I would give consideration to the 9900NT since its ball-bearing fan should theoretically offer longer life. On the other hand, I have seen simple sleeve-bearing case fans run 24x7 for 6+ years without any problems, so the lack of ball-bearings in the 9900MAX is likely not an issue.

I have my 9900Max on a i7-2600k that is slightly overclocked to 4.0GHz (default is 3.4GHz). The motherboard has never commanded the Zalman fan over 900rpm, because even when stress-testing all four cores for an hour the temps topped out at 52C. Idle temp is 31C. (These tests were in a 21C room.) I consider that pretty good for an air-based solution.

The 9900Max came with mounting hardware for Intel 1155/1156/1366/775 sockets, and AMD AM3/AM2+/AM2 sockets.

I have this on my i5-2500K Asus p8p67Deluxe with a Coolermaster HAF922 case. It really was easy to install. There seems to be a lot of confusion about the double sided tape that comes in the box. The tape really isn't necessary, it just makes holding the backplate in place easier as the shoulder screws are being inserted from the top. I did have a Thermal Take Frio cooler on my system. After the thing would not stop rattling I decided to go with the 9900 Max and I'm glad I did. At idle my cpu temp is 34C and it is completely free from rattles. I can hear the fan blades running, but it's such a low level noise that it is hardly noticeable. This is definitely a good choice in cooling.

In my last build I used a Zalman cooler with the same 'orb' design and had great results with it. I believe it was a CNPS9500 or something like that. Because I am a sucker for their orb design, I've been wanting to use this cooler for my new PC.

I read several reviews for this CPU cooler. Most were positive however, some not so much. I put this cooler on a Intel 3770K processor and at idle temps have been around 26c-28c @ 3.5ghz using Artic Silver 5. I have yet to test its cooling ability under any kind of load but the fact that it keeps the processor cooler than my motherboard, I am confident that it will provide adequate cooling if I decide to clock to 4.5ghz.

Reviews for this product do make a good point that you can't switch out the fan if you wanted to do that. I do like how this processor does not hang over the dimm slots on the ASUS P8Z77 Deluxe which is another reason I picked this over a higher end cooler.

I would definitely recommend this cooler to anyone that is a fan of its orb design and looking for decent cooling at a reasonable price. This cooler fits the CM 690 II easily with room to spare. Although installing this thing is not exactly straight forward, the directions are written well enough that I didn't have too much trouble. I do however recommend installing this on your motherboard before it's in your case even if your motherboard tray has a cut out for the back plate.

To address the common concerns (early apologies for a long review):

1) Yes, this can be a bit of a pain to install

2) Yes, you will want to have the motherboard out of the case for the installation process.

3) Yes, you will want to do some measurements if you have a smaller case to make sure you have enough clearance (height being the most likely issue).

Now that we have that out of the way...

I purchased this cooler for my system rebuild. My old system was a Core i7 920 with a Zalman CNPS 9900ALED. I overclocked that configuration frequently. The cooler never showed any signs of trouble, and my temperatures were exactly in line with performance numbers in various reviews. My rebuild is based on a Core i7 2600K. I am currently overclocked to 4.6GHz (constant, not turbo). I'll be detailing the CPU in my review of it. Initially, I had to run my new build with the stock CPU cooler for a few days, due to a delay in processing for my order of this cooler. During that span of time, I went through hours of gaming, video transcoding, and basic usage. The stock cooler is NOT sufficient. Previous generations of the Intel stock cooler have been much better. I had idle temperatures circa 50-60C and load temperatures of 80-84C. Yes, I mean Celsius. Not thrilling, to say the least. For those who wonder, yes I had the cooler seated properly, and no I hadn't yet overclocked.

This cooler finally arrived. Having used the 9900ALED before, the size and weight was not unexpected. In comparison, this cooler DOES have a much nicer appearance. What surprised me was that this cooler is much more sturdy. With the previous model, the fin towers flexed quite a bit during handling. This model is much most stable.
