Quick tip: Don't be like me and try to boot from external HDD, will throw an epePC error which I couldn't find anything about online. Click the CD/DVD option in the boot menus and it'll pick it up and fly. Cheers!

This is my new favorite tech tool. As an IT Consultant and computer repair person I find myself needing to boot from all sorts of CDs and DVDs throughout the day. I also am not the most organized with my discs, so I would constantly realize I left a disc in a computer at the office that I need at a particular on-site job. This gadget gets rid of all of those issues, because I have every ISO I need on the drive and can boot from any of them as needed.

I have a name brand 250GB SSD inside my Zalman. I've got it formatted as a single partition and have multiple folders that I use for storage of images (Acronis or Macrium), tools like Ninite, RMM installers, and more. I've also got the _iso folder which has my ISOs for various tools like Windows installation, Linux installation, bootable Acronis and Macrium, Falcon Four, Hirens, and other important bootable media.

I just use the jog dial on the side to move through the list of ISOs. The only con to this method is that the jog dial doesn't feel as firm as I would like. It wobbles side to side, especially when pressing it in as a button. Because of this I find myself having to lift my finger to press again every so often, but it doesn't change the fact that this device has been not only a time saver, but also a money saver (no more burning last minute discs for jobs)

I ran into some issues on a Dell PowerEdge server that doesn't like mounting/detecting boot USB devices traditionally, so I have to select the boot menu from the BIOS, THEN plug in the hard drive and select the ISO for the server to detect it as a bootable option. It would be nice if it had some NVRAM to remember the last ISO selected to be mounted. Keep this in mind if you plan to use this on Dell servers.

Any other computer I've plugged it in I've had no issues. I've also found the connecting cable can be fragile, and you definitely do not want to move it especially if its in use. That said, the product works very well and the features make it worth the investment. It's saved me a lot of time and frustration.

I have it paired with a 250 GB Corsair SSD and am happy with the investment.

No more piles of bootable usbkeys! This has been a real timesaver. I only had one setup issue with it, I had to format the drive while in the caddy before it would see .iso files under _iso (even with the latest firmware applied). After that it saw all the 8.3 & LFN format .iso I dumped in there. Install of an OS from this is pretty darn quick too. I have not tried out the one button backup option as of yet.

Great idea, horrible product. I've gone through two of these devices and have a co-worker who also owns one. Both of us have had issues getting the virtual CD/DVD feature working. It seems to be highly dependent on the hardware of the system you plug this device into, and it's about a 50/50 with the computers I've tried to use this with. Getting a computer to boot using the virtual CD/DVD feature works less than 20% of the time. To make things worse, Zalman has outdated documentation for this device, and the newest firmware (which is required to get the virtual CD/DVD features working) is only marginally better than the old firmware. Don't expect any customer support for this device and don't expect it to work as advertised, and you might be happy with it; well, except for the fact it kills the hard drive that you use with this enclosure. I've lost 1 drive to the first enclosure and 2 drives to the second enclosure. Not just filesystem corruption, the drives start doing the dreaded clicking and shortly after, will die completely. One might think it is because the drive is portable and perhaps I'm being rough on it, but after the first drive died and I got the second enclosure, I kept the device in my drawer and only used it occasionally. That second enclosure still ate 2 more hard drives. (That reminds me, don't expect this enclosure to work with Solid State Drives, I tried and it failed.)

Needed something to make about ten to twenty 2.5" HDD units at my work accessible. Namely as we needed to find out what was and was not valuable on each of them. From there, turning one or two of the drives into loading stations for different Linux distributions was a bit of a breeze. Sadly did not work exactly as shown, but they are doing the job for me now.
