Zebra Mass Market Paperback – October 1, 1980
In the early 1970s, a small band of well-dressed, clean-cut African American men began terrorizing the residents of San Francisco with guns and machetes. Their victims ranged from a teenage Salvation Army cadet to a middle-aged Jordanian grocer to an eighty-one-year-old janitor. The streets became deserted and tourism plunged. It took months before the culprits could be identified, with the help of an informer. They were members of a Black Muslim cult aspiring to earn the title "Death Angel" by slaughtering white victims.
Combining history and dramatic recreations, this is the "repellent but riveting" in-depth story of a horrifying killing spree and the fanatical hatred that drove it--and the SFPD's desperate quest to take the culprits down (Kirkus Reviews).
"[Clark Howard's] pounding narrative meticulously describes the so-called Zebra killings of 1973-74, when 23 white San Franciscans were murdered or maimed by a group of Black Muslim extremists. In the retelling, the cold jargon of police files leaps starkly to life." --Time

- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2014This book is about a group reported to be within the Nation of Islam, that carried out the systematic murders of white people in California. Characterizing whites as "blue-eyed devils," these attacks were random and often very brutal. (One white man having been kidnapped off of the street and slowly cut to pieces). Although this book has been out of print for a number of years, it is a good read and an accurate account of the beliefs and behaviors of a shadow group that engaged in race-motivated attacks against whites in San Francisco in the early 1970's -- and who were reportedly members of Louis Farrakhan's Nation of Islam. The crimes were chilling, but what is even more chilling is that people don't realize the extent to which "cults" can become warped with hatred and turn to horrific actions -- even when under the guise of what should be a legitimate religion. When hatred is preached from the pulpit, the result can be individuals who act on the desire to punish those that he hatred is directed towards. If we think this type of thing only happens in the Middle East (and we are inundated with the atrocities being perpetrated against other sects by "rebels" or whatever terminology is popular), the same things have happened here and it is likely that history will repeat itself and they will happen again. Hatred and violence is hatred and violence and it makes no difference whether it's being preached in a church, a mosque, or a temple -- it's not holy hatred when preached where the words of God are supposedly spoken. This book is timely and shines a bright light on how teaching black people to blame white people for all of the difficulties they encounter in life (whitey is evil) has contributed greatly to activities such as the "Knockout Game," the rioting, looting, and other behaviors that have been going on throughout the country, with the flames of black unrest being fanned by people like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Nancy Grace, and other media personalities (including celebrities). It should be a must read on college campuses where "check your privilege" is routinely said to white students. Creating a culture of blame and hatred is counter-productive to a successful society and does nothing to advance the people being encouraged to believe that they cannot excel and succeed because of prejudice by other members of society.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2016Zebra refers to black "and" white in the book. It sounds more like black "on" white, since all the rapes, stabbings, shootings, and the one disembowelment involved black killers and white victims. Specifically, these were Black Muslims of a radicalized type we do not seem to be dealing with in the US until recently, such as the September 2014 beheading in Oklahoma and the shooting of a police officer in Philadelphia.
These Black Muslims were radicalized in prison, San Quentin, and then at some kind of halfway house called Black Self Help. Clark Howard presents them as weak-minded failures with low self-confidence. They have real names and then street names, which others call confusing. I don't think it was confusing, but the character of Anthony would have shown with more clarity perhaps if the book started with his role in concluding the killing spree. Although children were supposed to be the prize target and were the first but failed targets, the Zebra Black Muslims did not kill any.
Although rape could have become a common theme, it was replaced by shooting that was later declared by cops on the case to be poorly executed: men knowing too little about guns trying to do too much with them, also men who repeatedly chose to shoot people in the back.
The Death Angel cult that terrorized San Francisco led to complaints about civil liberties for innocent black men. According to Howard, cooperation from blacks feeling victimized was hard to come by, but no "resistance violence" is reported. While feelings were being hurt on one racial side, lives were being taken on the other, later to become the blueprint regarding broken window policing and Stop and Frisk. I'm not an expert on any of this, but the similarities between "stitches for snitches" and all of the whining out of the black community in 1974 San Francisco don't require 30 years on the force or 5 years in the joint. Howard covers this for no more than 5% of the book.
What he really covers is the day to day interaction and ungrammatical dialogue between men who were competing with each other for attention and kills. "Be" gets used as a linking verb so often that poor conjugation could have been a clue just as much as the .32 slugs or the '69 Cadillac. There are no sympathetic portrayals, but there is a human shadow that these illiterate and mindless thugs are shown to shrink from. Judo is a compelling "real crime" character.

Great book I read in prison many years ago. Remembered it and had to track it down. So I went to Amazon, they always have every book I need.
The book itself is a true story about horrific crimes committed in the name of Allah many years ago in California. A very good read.
