Forget the photography conventions for 85mm. If you are doing conventional photography; then shooting with the Batis 1.8 is probably more suitable, but the Loxia 2.4 is a truly lovely creative lens, and has a truly lovely lens build compared to plastic Batis 1.8. It does have quirks like some barrel distortion(s) at edges, but if you are willing to work with its quirks you have true brilliance. Unfortunately I currently can’t have both a Loxia for creativity, and a Batis as a work horse.

I took a long time to buy this Zeiss 85 mm lens as the reviews are few and far between.
One particular review talked about this lenses sterile optical perfection.

Unfortunately in the last 10 years some photographers and lens reviewers have been harping on optical perfection and sharpness and a lot of manufacturers have responded with sterile optics with impeccable sharpness and correction. This has come at a high costs to justify the myriads of corrective optics and coatings.

The photographs from these lenses reflect the optical qualities but without any soul or character.
I know, because I tried to get the optically perfect lenses, but was largely dissatisfied with the rendering of images by these optics.

I started focusing on how best the lenses captures the story. And this lens did not fit.
I finally took a chance and bought one, feeling that I would return it if the images did not reflect my criteria.

I was fortunately pleasantly surprised. The lens is sharp, but colors, contrasts and overall images were vintage Zeiss.
Bravo!
