What is an unlocked phone?
An unlocked phone is a device that is not bound to any carrier or plan. It allows you to choose your phone first and your carrier second. Upon selecting a plan, simply insert the carrier's SIM card into the phone and you're ready to go. If you decide you want to change carriers down the road or want to take an international trip, it's as simple as replacing your existing SIM card with a new SIM and activating your new plan.
What are the benefits of an unlocked phone?
Freedom: Choose the carrier with the best service or price. If you find a better deal later, you have the ability to change to a different carrier.
Travel: Take your phone internationally and use the carrier of your choice. It's as easy as inserting an active SIM card.
Selection: Choose the phone with the features you want, whether or not your carrier sells it, and get more service options without a contract.
How do I set up my unlocked phone?
The first thing you’ll need is a SIM card for your desired carrier. When activated, the SIM card will let your phone connect to your carrier’s network. If you decide to upgrade to a newer unlocked phone in the future, you can easily remove the SIM card from your old phone and put it in your new phone—just make sure you get the right size of SIM card (nano, micro, or standard) for your phone. If you want to use your phone while traveling internationally, you can easily buy a SIM card for a carrier that operates where you’re traveling. As long as it’s activated, you can just swap SIM cards when you arrive at your destination.

I had a Nexus 5 for a couple of years - until the power button went 'wonky'. So I researched phones and bought the ZenFone.
I hate bloatware. This phone has tons of annoying Asus applications. After having the pure Android experience with the Nexus - I find all of the ZenFone apps just annoying. Who cares.
The camera is pretty bad. It does fine in bright sunlight. Don't try to take a photo indoors without a flash. I like(ed) to take photos of the live music shows I go to. I could take pretty good photos with the Nexus - in a club - with stage lighting. Not so with the ZenFone. I have pretty much given up taking those kind of photos.
And - I "shot myself in the foot' - with a clever app on the ZenFone. There is a settings app that lets you control whether or not an app should be started automatically when the phone boots up. Sounds like a good thing to do - reduce memory usage etc. I did this with the messaging app. I expected that I would still receive texts. Or that they would be queued. Nope. If you don't let the messaging app autostart - the phone will just not receive/drop any texts while the texting app is not on.
It is hard to debug a problem where you are just not receiving texts. I did not know I had a problem until my daughter said she had sent me several texts - that I never received. So - that was kind of disappointing. Any setting where you could just lose texts - should probably warn you that this could happen.
My son (who has a $650 HTC phone) says - you get what you pay for. His phone has a pretty good camera (but still has the bloatware). I looked at getting a Nexus 6 - but it seemed too big to fit in my pocket. So I am kinda stuck with this phone for a couple of years.
My two cons, but only personal cons. The phone is too large for me. I like smaller phones that I can easily carry on my side and fit in one hand. My Samsung Galaxy Avant is the perfect size and I would go with the iPhone 5S if I had the money and wasn't already an android fan. But there's not a small phone on the market with this type of horsepower and at this price level. I seriously looked at the Sony Xperia Z3 compact, but decided against it due to cost and Sony just doesn't seem to be hanging into the cellphone market.
The second con is the embedded battery. I swore I'd never buy a phone with a non-removable battery. I'm the type who doesn't replace his electronic devises every two years, and I can't see sending it in for replacement, what a gimmick. However, I needed more RAM and at this price I couldn't turn it down.
I cannot validate the complaints of battery heat and poor battery life. There's some heat from the battery and the battery doesn't last all day long, but that's because I'm a very heavy user. Nothing worse than any other phones I've had.
Overall, I completely recommend this phone, the 4gb model. If Asus keeps this quality up at this price point, they're going to do some serious damage to the other high-priced phone manufacturers.
1st 06/17/2016 when I finally got it I was so excited like kids on christmas, the phone's battery was completly dead I had to plug it to the charger and wait like 10 hours or more to finally be able to use it.
2nd 07/10/2016 happened last night I was in a reunion with friends and I turned off the phone cause I wasn't using it so why have it on?, that was with 68% of charge, when I turned it on next day on the morming to call a cab the battery was 50% and from no where the phone just auto turn off, I was a little scared, I try to turn it on and nothing the battery on the display was red, then I plugged to try to get some charge, and my surprise when I start was the battery says it has 54% percent of charge I tested it again, and same thing happened at 49% of charge. Well after I finally got home I put it to charge for like 6 hours maybe more, I turned it on and it was 100%, nice and for my surprise the battery was dropping like 3% of charge PER MINUTE! when using it, an even in stand by mode dropped 2 percent in I don't know 10-15 maybe, I searched on the net, forums, etc, and already tried this possible solutions:
1)Reduce the screen brightness
2)Shorten screen on time when not using
Settings > Display > Sleep
if you are using flip cover : Settings > ASUS Cover > Automatic sleep.
3)Close or disable unwanted apps running in background. use Auto start manager for the same.
4)Boost your memory frequently by using boost button.
5)Turn off Location,Bluetooth, WiFi, NFC if not in use.
6)Use Smart saving mode or Power saving mode.
7)Reduce the use of 3G/4G data and use wifi if available.
8)Use Smart switch in power saver app to use Switch by battery level or Switch by Shedule and use super saving mode when you are going to sleep
And big surprise NOTHING WORKED, I am really disapointed, having a cellphone with less then a month of use with this critical problem, I hope nobody else even try to buy one ASUS phone, and ASUS big shame of you having so many good products for gaming and have so bad hardware on phones,
P.D.: To be honest 1 star is to much for this product, it doesn't even deserve half star.
