Also, I didn't like Zephyr at first. I don't want to do spoilers so I won't go into the specifics, but the main thing is, as I read on and got to know him better I saw that he was being written very three dimensional. You didn't hate or love him, you shook your head at his faults and kind nodded, at his strengths. That is very deft writing.
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is as good as any story is, I can't give 5 stars unless it rocks my world, which has only happened a handful of times in my life.
I have not finished the series but the elements appear to be building nicely am on board for what Warren Hately has in store.
A person who made sure all the words were in the right place;
A person who suggested paragraphs should be less that one hundred words;
A person who thought it was a good idea to use the devices you set up, and not leave them inexplicably hanging for all time;
A person who made your writing sound a little less drunk.
That time has passed, but here's the thing: I read three books worth of it, and it kinda works. If you can get past all the nit-picky crap, the story is engaging and the characters are especially human when you get to know them.
Parts of it read like George Clooney has written a romance novel, what with the lesbian three-somes, but what can you expect when your main character is naturally jacked and runs around in leather?
Zephyr's natural charm can come across a little misogynistic, and if you have a hard time with that in fiction, you're going to be really disappointed with real life. Seriously, this novel is heavily fueled by testosterone.
That's not to say Zephyr is two dimensional (or less). He struggles to hold together his marriage, and despairs of his failure at fatherhood, occasionally.
