This is really one of the greatest guitar records ever. I have easily listened to this a few hundred times already. I am a guitarst (20+ years) and follow all the greats; Randy, Eddie, Zakk, Dime, Marty, Jason Becker, Hetfield, etc. This one is up there with any of them. The solos are amazing, jaw dropping. But not just technique for the sake of technique. The melodies are amazing. This is now on the list of the most critical guitar records for any metal/rock guitarist to own; Perpetual Burn, Dragons Kiss, Zero Order Phase, and Plains of Oblivion. Zero Order Phase is beyond amazing.
I have a hard time knowing which one I want to listen to, Zero Order Phase or Plains of Oblivion. The rhythm playing is amazing too - the riffs are just sick.
I talked with Jeff about the records and told him that they totally reminded me of Perpetual Burn and Dragons Kiss and that I read that is what he had in mind when he was making them. He really appreciated that and took it as a compliment.
He was sick playing this live, and he was a stellar human being. He gave everybody tons of time and photos and was really available. He was super nice and humble and he didnt have to be. That just makes him that much better.
Beyond amazing. I am a fan for life. While I cant wait for future releases, these will never get old.
btw this is very similar to my review of Plains of Oblivion because they both hit me in very much the same way.

What an amazing album to say the least. If you are a fan of Nevermore and love the solo's you hear on any of their albums you cant go wrong with this. A respectable number of the songs are definately in the vein of This Godless Endeavor also. That said, this album is the best guitar album I have heard since Jason Becker's "Perpetual Burn". Anyone familiar with Jeff Loomis knows he is a fan of Jason Becker and it shows on this album. This album has it all and then some. If you like a respectable mixture of Jason Becker, Yngwie Malmsteen, Frank Gambale and Paul Gilbert then this album is for you. I can only hope the guitar players of this world vote this album as Best Shred Album in Guitar World for 2008. Jeff Loomis deserves so much credit for this album. He is underated as is, and if he does not get the recognition he deserves for this album then another music atrocity he been done.

I've always admired Jeff Loomis's playing style and staggering technical skill, but never really got too into Nevermore because of the vocals. So when I found out Jeff had done a solo album, I couldn't wait to hear it.
To sum up the album, it is a very solid instrumental feast and you will hear the relentlessly melodic soloing and crushing rhythms you'd expect from Jeff. The guitar playing showcased here is nothing short of top tier. Production quality is great. It's said that you should never judge something by its cover, but the picture used for the album art is definitely reflective of the whole tone of the album (epic, somewhat dark, intriguingly vacant) which I guess is the point of album art if it's chosen correctly.
Anyway, after several listens, I do feel like something is missing from the album. Some of the songs can feel a little repetitive or like there should be vocals (and this is coming from someone who actively seeks out instrumental metal). I think because of the way the songs are somewhat loosely structured, the album can, at times, lose your attention...but even when this happens, you still feel immersed in the atmosphere Jeff has created. This is definitely an "album". The songs all feel like pieces of the same puzzle, which is nice.
Stand-out tracks for me were Shouting Fire at a Funeral, Jato Unit, Devil Theory (probably the heaviest track) and Miles of Machines.
I give this album a solid 8.5 out of 10 and I look forward to whatever Jeff decides to release next.

Just when you thought you weren't going to hear anything in the fast paced technically proficient world of heavy rock music for a while, along come Mr Loomis with one of the best solo works I've heard since Madmen And Sinners by Tim Donahue !!!!
This work is well thought out and well conceived considering the unfortunate minute market for it. Well maybe I'm not as smart as the masses but It seems that true genius is scrutinized to death as a masquerade to uncontrollable envy by its' reviewers. Well not this reviewer. This CD offers a cocophony of listening pleasure to those of you that enjoy the combination of instrumental dominance and musical adventure to places yet untraveled. This is one of the few works of this type that offer up truly emotional melodic performances with dynamics to accentuate them nearly perfectly.

This is an amazing instrumental metal album from one of the greatest guitarist to have ever lived. In my oppinion Jeff Loomis is metal's very best guitarist, and this album has all of his signature sounds. This instumental piece is different from most guitar driven instrumental albums because the songs are not just a showcase of guitar virtuoso, it showcases Loomis's excelent song writing skills. The songs aren't just out of control solo's. Each bigger, faster, and longer than the last, like many of these sorts of albums. They are real songs that could very well been transformed into songs for the next Nevermore album. The lack of a singer does not take away from the music, it does however showcase an amazing guitarist at work.

I'm a big fan of Nevermore (Jeff Loomis' band) forever now, and have always been a fan of guitarists such as Malmsteen, Vai, Satriani, etc. This album is just awesome: imagine Nevermore, but without vocals and with more guitars.
One thing I've never liked about those shredder albums is the fact that they can play real good leads, but they such at rythym (creating dumb down riffs that are essentially boring). Well, that's not the case with Jeff's album: his riffs are awesome, strong, to the point, and they don't work just as the background for senseless shredding; they are a display of how Jeff masters the arts of song writing, rythym guitar playing, and shredding.
I can't have enough of this album. Period.

これぞMETAL GUITAR!の魅力。
Reviewed in Japan on November 7, 2015
Heavy Metalのロマンを感じられますよ。刺激的!。
