Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Donlay’s third novel rivets the reader from the first page and doesn’t let up until the shocking end. Donovan Nash witnesses the theft of an executive jet and immediately finds himself accused of helping the villains get away. Ruthless FBI agent Veronica Montero digs into Nash’s past and discovers a secret that would destroy Nash and his family. Rather than blow the whistle, Montero decides to blackmail Nash as a way of getting his assistance in solving the case. What appears to be a simple theft conceals a terrorist threat that could kill millions, and the man behind the plot has ties to Nash’s past. Fans of political thrillers and military fiction, especially those dealing with the aerospace industry, will devour this one. Without a doubt, Donlay’s best to date. --Jeff Ayers --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Review

In Code Black Philip Donlay firmly establishes himself as a writer of great thrillers. The first hundred pages are breathtaking. His knowledge of aviation is incredible. Code Black is even better than Category Five. A real winner. -- --Steve Thayer, New York Times best-selling author of The Weatherman and Wolf Pass --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Phillip Donlay wrote a decent thriller in Zero Separation with flawed characters abounding. Fights, car chases, explosions, gun battles are all present as is slowly revealing character development on many fronts. The book ends not with the end of the chase but rather later when the characters have to pick-up the pieces and move on with their lives. Enjoy. Read a NetGallery edition.

With Zero Separation, Philip Donlay has given us one heck of a ride. From start to finish, the pace just keeps moving along with one twist and turn after another. Donovan Nash and his best friend and pilot Michael Ross are blind-sided by an attack shortly after their emergency landing at Boca Raton, Florida. Michael is beaten within an inch of his life, and the ensuing investigation threatens to ruin everything Donovan Nash has worked for during the last twenty years.

FBI agent Veronica Montero accidently finds out the secret Donovan has kept for years, one that could bring down his business, his family and his life. She uses that information to get him to help her with her own agenda. The two are forced to work together to bring down a terrorist with a devastating plan.

Zero Separation is a non-stop read that will keep readers turning pages late into the night. The characters are well formed and believable, and the relationships between the various players seem real. Donlay is adept at using emotion to further the plot and keep the reader engaged in the story. This is one of the best stories I've read in a while. Hoping for more great books from Donlay.

This review was based on an arc copy of Zero Separation I received from Oceanview Publishing in exchange for my honest opinion.

I have to be honest, I almost gave up on this one. It took over half the book to really get the story moving at the pace Category Five moved. Lots of heart-rending going on, as well. I think there was a lot of vagueness going on that was supposed to come across as suspense but bogged thinks down too much. Will give the next book a shot and see if this one was just a fluke.

I just finished Zero Separation, and whereas Code Black had me on the edge of my seat, Zero knocked me off it ☺. Wow! At my age, I’m not sure I could handle any more excitement. Kidding – it was a great read. I will be getting more of his books.

This work of Philip Donlay's is nothing like his other books I've read, e.g., "Category Five", where chilling action is found on every page and I think was published before this one. Rather, it's full of melodramatic accounts of the principal characters' lives. In particular, tales about Donovan's continuing guilt about Meredith and others almost dominate the book. I've rated his current thrillers 5 Stars, but this older one is a real yawner. Skip this one. The others I've read are self-standing, so you won't miss a thing.

I really enjoyed the story. Donovan is living a lie. He is successful but still living a lie. His plane takes a lightening strike and he has to put the plane down just a head of a storm in Florida. While he is still inside the plane talking to his wife, Lauren on the phone he sees his co-pilot being attacked on the tarmac next to the plane. He goes out and finds Michael has been shot. In the mean time the other guy steals the Gulfstream parked next to them. This starts a whole sequence of events that threaten to reveal his old identity and to cause a real problem to bring an attack on the Capital. Be sure to read this great story.

Philip Donlay's previous books were exciting thrillers, but this one is over the top! Zero Separation is non-stop excitement from the prologue to the epilogue. It has the added dimension of a nonfiction foundation of technical and scientific details. In addition, he invites his readers to experience what is taking place in the minds of his characters in a manor that any Psychologist would appreciate. A must read, can't wait for Donlay's next book!

In Donlay's 2nd book, we are, once again, thrust into the middle of the action, as he takes us on a ride that culminates in an attempt by terrorists to best Donovan Nash (the protagonist in this series) and bring death to a appallingly huge number of Americans. The characters are brilliant, propelling us through the action that ultimately brings us to the final, thrilling, scene of Donlay's novel. If you enjoyed his 1st book, you won't want to miss reading this one, as well.
