This book still has plenty of action that made me worry about Alexi, and I don't remember the last time I was worried about the fate of the main character. Alexi is struggling with urges he hasn't encountered before, and his behaviour changes, for good and ill. This is my favourite book so far, despite it ending with a twist that left me wanting the next book Right Now, and a surprise that left me speechless. (Yes, I talk to books, deal.)
The philosophy of the world is esoteric, and I can't describe it in simple terms, which probably is something many readers love. I don't dislike it, but it is unlike any other book I've read.
Great series, great characters, great world building. Buy it!
That said, the reason this book didn't get five stars is partly personal. Mr. Baldwin does a wonderful job getting the reader to connect with the main character, but therein lies the issue - he never catches a GOD-damned break! Alexi spends the whole book running from crisis to crisis and nothing good ever happens for him! (The one thing that does happens about ninety percent through thr book and is immediately taken away.) If you're like me and you tend to connect with the characters you read about, absolutely constant turmoil gets to be exhausting to read.
Honestly, based on the snippet we got for the plot of the fourth book, it looks like it's going to be even worse in that specific regard. I'm sure I'll buy it, but it's definitely going to be a book I'll have to mentally prepare myself to read as opposed to reading it purely for pleasure.
Great book James can't wait for more!
