Some may find the indepth description of battle manoeuvre a tad tedious.

Zhukov by Otto Preston Chaney is the revised edition of the same work.The most significant addition is the use of zhukov's expanded, revised memoirs.The book's length,almost 500 pages, is a fitting tribute to perhaps the Second World War's greatest soldier. Chaney's writing style is direct in the active voice and conveys stylistically the man written about.The work,in a word, is magisterial.Its chronological development is direct with little digression. It is fast paced read if one choses to read it so;however, it is a book which,if put down, is easy to start again.This book, with its scope,clarity,and readability, is a great starting point to understand a part of WWII that now for the first time,because of authors such as david glantz, is readily accessible to the american public. .Although the work was revised in early 90s,it is timeless history.One comes away,having read the book,understanding much about Zhukov's war,his Party,his times and most importantly,the man.

Chaney apparently relied very heavily on Soviet era panegyrics when writing this book. Not only is it an awful biography of Zhukov, it is an affront to all nonfiction writing. Throughout the book, there are conversations between Zhukov (hereafter Z) and others, notably Stalin (hereafter S). These portray Z as a brilliant commander (which he was) who had to constantly deal with S's amateur strategy, operational and even tactical thought (meaning these sources, if he used any - which I very, very much doubt, came from the Kruschev era and were designed to destroy the reputation of Stalin as the man who saved Russia). Perhaps this was true, Z's genius hampered by S's dilettante meddling. What makes it a farce is that the conversations between Z & S and others are QUOTED VERBATIM (!). As we all know, there are no genuine records of conversation between these men (or any historical figure) except in extraordinary situations where a stenographer was present - something that the USSR under S would never in a million years tolerate. There may have been official minutes at Supreme Command meeting, but these do not quote verbatim, as everyone knows. Furthermore, many if not most of these conversation where 'drawn' from many sources, none of which could possibly have preserved their actual words. Phones calls, for God's sake? So, Chaney 'made up' these conversation from whole cloth. These 'quotes' are not just here and there, but are all through the book. This blending of pure fantasy and history makes history a farce. If Chaney was willing to stoop so low, I cannot stomach the rest of the book because there is no telling what else he might have 'felt' should have occurred and so inserted them into his 'history.'

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

Great, balanced biography

The biography starts a bit shaky, with first 20-25 pages sounding quite amaturish. I had to read the authors credentials to ensure I wasnt wasting my time. As it turned out, I wasnt. The book takes on a good flow and does justice to Zhukov's life. I read Yuriy Bubnov's comments and let me say that this book 'does' throw light on Zhukov's darker side, there is no attempt to hide it, he was a ruthless, egomaniac but you still cant dispute his military genius.

As for the mistakes Zhukov made, most of them were thanks to Stalin and his cronies, who just could not stop meddling and overruling military strategy for political reasons though Stalin had no military experiance. War is best left to the generals.

However if you really want to read the best book on Russia's role in WWII, Russia at War by Alexander Werth is THE book. The best book on WWII I ever read.

This newest edition of "Zhukov" is a must for anyone that has an interest in the Marshal's career and/or an interest in the former USSR military machine and how it operated. After years of false and censored information on Zhukov and the Soviet military, "Zhukov" brings to light the the personalities (and incompetence) of such Soviet individuals as Stalin, Khruschev, and Breznev. The book helps show how these 'leaders' (through their low level of intelligence and maturity) helped stunt the growth of the USSR as a nation. Most importantly, the book brings to light the actual accomplishments of Marshal Zhukov (ie. Moscow, Stalingrad, Berlin, etc.) and how much of a role he had in the planning of these operations. From these accomplishments of the Marshal, one can see how 'cults of personalities' were able to appear in such magnitude in the former USSR. The book is a fast reader and highly enjoyable. Read it if interested in WWII from the Soviet perspective.
