The Gen16 Acoustic / Electric Cymbal System represents a paradigm shift in cymbal design from Zildjian. Utilizing patented reduced volume acoustic cymbals, patented cymbal pickup and Digital Cymbal Processor "DCP" to tone shape the sound of each cymbal the user can apply an array of tone shapes to each real Zildjian Gen16 cymbal. Unlike cymbal triggers, Gen16 cymbals may be played with sticks, rods or mallets. They can be brushed and choked like traditional cymbals because they are real cymbals. The Gen16 Buffed Bronze cymbal produces a richer and warmer tone then the original Gen16 nickel plated cymbal. The Direct Source pickup captures the pure acoustic sound of the Gen16 Buffed Bronze cymbal while it eliminates feedback, crosstalk, and phasing associated with microphones, making them perfect for live performance and practice. The DCP provides tone shape presets, volume and R/L pan control for up to 5 cymbals while allowing the user to blend external edrum controller audio and or an auxiliary audio input. It also has a powerful headphone output for on stage monitoring or silent drumming when using headphones.

I ordered these along with some triggers and mesh heads to create a conversion hybrid kit. I was initially disappointed gave this product 2-stars. Nowhere in town had a place to try them out, so I had relied on online videos. I purchased these over the Zildjian L80s (and purchasing the pickups separately) thinking that with the big price difference that there must be a big difference in sound quality (from the cymbals and the digital processor.) I'm afraid these still need work. These truly are just for practice and the on a scale from 1 to 5 the over sound quality is about a 2 out of 5 out of the box. After owning them a while, using the computer interface, trying different settings, trying and different placements of the pickup on the cymbal, I would increase that to a 3 out of 5.
Since playing with them a bit more and downloading the Zildjian computer program, I've gotten them to sound a little better. The hi-hats are probably the best. But then there's a sharp drop off in quality to the 18" crash and a smaller drop off to the 20" ride cymbal. The bell sound on the ride is not very good. But you can get one and it's better than on the 18" cymbal. The"crash" sound on the 18" crash is okay. I wonder if it's little better on the 16" (which doesn't come with this pack.) I wonder why they don't have a 20" ride, 16"crash, and 14" hats combo pack. It seems like that's the standard basic setup of most players.
I figured at this price point that they'd be a little better on sound quality. Be prepared; they don't sound very good out of the box. With a little work and tinkering you can get them to sound a little better. Experiment with which hole to put the pickup in and adjust the setting with the Zildjian computer program. The computer program is much better than tinkering with it on the module (DCP - digital cymbal processor) itself. There are 23 pre-programmed sound profiles and you can save your own in profiles #24 and up.
Here's my sound quality reference....For full volume cymbals, I use Zildjian K cymbals all around. 14" hats, 20" ride, 18" dark crash, 16" dark crash. I've always had a lot of faith in Zildjian. I was somewhat disappointed in this product.
Pros: Unbelievably low volume and they play/feel just like real full volume cymbals, really cool lights that come with the pickups
Cons: Poor sound quality out of the box, no set up guide (there a bunch of small parts for the pickup housing to attach to the cymbal stand), moderate sound quality after experimenting with the setup more
Great sounding, much better than the nickel plated
All three of the Direct Source Pickups were take out and replaced with used ones. None of the packages had the original manufacture seal and one even had red lock-tite residue on it
After paying $900 for NEW cymbals, the 16" crash was obviously used even though it was in a factory sealed box. My 16" crash has what looks like sharp around the edges, wear and scuff marks all around it, wear marks and what looks like the making of keyhole in the center.
I never review anything but I feel like I was really screwed on these. I would definitely return them if I didn't need them now.
These Gen16's BLOW AWAY any other hihat on the market in terms of feel...they feel perfect. Very customizable DSP sound modeling means the cymbals, including the hihats can sound like most any way you want.
Admittedly, Gen16s had a bit of a shaky start, but with the newer direct source pickups, better-sounding bronze cymbals, and a brand new user interface program for Mac or PC (as of July 2016) they have come a loooong way. I'm impressed and am looking at buying more.
