For testing purposes I have an Ortek MCK-142 Pro mechanical keyboard that is a favorite throughout my office. It is an AT model with a PS-2 output. In addition, I added an IBM KB-8923 and a Dell SK-8100, both ‘pure’ PS-2 keyboards. I want to use these on a modern desktop computer with 2.0 and 3.0 USB ports. In researching for a way to do it, I realized that there is a difference between an ‘adapter’, which is only a wiring solution and a ‘converter’ that has electronics to assist in making it work. The problem is that there are many brands and items available and no real way of knowing whether any or all of them will work. So I took the proverbial bull by the horns and bought one of each to try out. This resulted in ordering 9 items for a cost of about $77, not too bad for my purposes.
I purchased: USB TO DUAL PS2 Adapter Convertor – White by SaiTech IT; Monoprice PS/2 Keyboard/Mouse to USB Converter Adapter, Black (110934); Tripp Lite USB to PS/2 Adapter - Keyboard and Mouse (B015-000); TRENDnet USB 1.1 to PS/2 Converter, TU-PS2; Adesso PS/2 to USB Adapter, connects 2 PS/2 connectors to 1 USB port/hub (ADP-PU21 ); SANOXY USB to PS/2 Adapter (this one has wires); StarTech USB to PS/2 Adapter - Keyboard and Mouse; Radio Shack PS-2 Female to USB-A Port Adapter 26-723; and SANOXY PS2 Keyboard To USB Adapter (this one is a little block).
I tried them one by one. All were recognized on the USB Device Manager as a keyboard, yet all, but one, failed to allow the keyboards to be recognized and function.
The only one that worked perfectly for all 3 keyboards was the “SANOXY PS2 Keyboard To USB Adapter” – the one that is a little block. This being Amazon, I immediately returned the other 8 and ordered a bunch of the Sanoxy's. Thought you might find my experiment helpful.SANOXY PS2 Keyboard To USB Adapter

Perfect for old keyboards.

I decided that I wanted to make a good use of an old microsoft Keyboard that was still fully functional, as a secondary keyboard.
My computer install is a bit complex as it entails multiple screens and a projector spanned over two rooms.
It is always a pain in the neck to move back to my main keyboard and mouse to activate pages or change any setting while I am trying to watch a movie on my projector.
So I extended two USB ports and attached a second keyboard and a second mouse. Then the econd keyboard died (cable short) and I had this old microsoft keyboard available but with a PS2 cable... I needed something to convert it to USB and this is where the Sanoxy PS2 Keyboard to USB adapter comes into play.

So, this adapter is meant for older keyboards to be still usable either on laptops or desktop that do not use PS2 plug anymore.
It works flawlessly. All the keys work fine and I can also make use of the special functions like sound control, mute, start, stop etc...
One drawback I found and did not investigate any further is that it does not get recognized when I try using it along with a USB hub. I am not sure why.

I am very glad I found this item.

IMPORTANT CAUTION, and some advice

I ordered a gray-colored Ziotek adapter from this company, and what I got was a black, unbranded Chinese knock-off. The price I paid (under another auction) was $17.95, not the $19.95 being charged at the present time. I complained to Amazon, and my money was refunded. However, I decided to open it and try it, and it worked. Ultimately, I negotiated a price of $10 for it, and I paid that amount. It should be noted that an unbranded Chinese knock-off with no warranty is not worth the same money that a name-brand product is. The internal circuitry may not be the same as the Ziotek adapter, and it may not last as long.

As others have said, this adapter (both the Ziotek and the knock-off) is very wide and will take up three USB slots. However, that problem can be solved by buying a short USB extension. (I haven't tried it with an extension, but I see no reason why it shouldn't work.) I also found that the knock-off adapter is not a tight fit in the USB port, and it will easily come out if the wire is pulled.

Many people don't know that those fabulous original IBM keyboards are still being made (actually, the ones being made were the ones made by Lexmark, but they are almost as good). IBM spun off their personal-computer division under the brand-name Lexmark; and when Lexmark decided to discontinue the keyboards, a group of their employees bought the keyboard division (along with the manufacturing equipment), and they continue to make the keyboards under the brand-name Unicomp. The unicomp keyboards are made with and without the extra Windows keys that were eventually added (and the other keys that were added). You can also get a reduced-footprint keyboard, and a keyboard with a trackball. The technology they use is the same as with the IBM keyboards (i.e., buckling-spring keys). Also, all these keyboards come with USB plugs instead of PS/2 plugs, so they work with modern computers.

One more thing: If you have an IBM keyboard that is missing keys, you can get the keys from Unicomp.

I have both an original model-M keyboard and a new Unicomp keyboard. The older keyboard, after years of use, has a slightly softer feel, while the new keyboard is much more clicky -- but they are both wonderfully comfortable to type on. A better keyboard was never made.
