Zip-Line Paperback – Illustrated, September 10, 2012
Purchase options and add-ons
Zip-line is a book for kids that have a scar on their chest from open heart surgery to repair a congenital heart defect (CHD). Used by families, schools and hospitals, Zip-line whimsically explains the answer to the question "How did that line get there?".
The story centers around a little girl and her bunny rabbit explaining to the reader how she got the scar on her chest and how she isn't any different than anyone else. It shows her unrestricted in activities and features age appropriate illustrations - no blood, or anything remotely graphic. It aims to set a model for kids with a CHD to be comfortable with themselves, their heart scar, and the surgery that they were too young to remember.
Written and Illustrated by a dad whose daughter had a successful 8 hour surgery at 6 months old.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2014My son had open heart surgery as an infant. He has a big scar and goes to a cardiologist, but we have never made a big deal of those facts. That said, we know there will come a time when he does notice his scar and will, maybe, become more self conscious of it. We want to have a continuing open dialog about his surgery and scar now so he will be prepared to feel comfortable to answer questions from other kids as they arise.
This book does a great job of talking about heart surgery and the "zip line" that stays with them in a kid friendly, easy to read and easy to understand rhyming book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2018I bought this book for my Daughter's kindergarten teacher to read to the class! it is a well written book, easy for other kids to understand. My daughter has had 2 open heart surgeries and this book makes it easy for other kids to know that even though she has a scar, she is no different from them. It also helps open the door for the kids to ask her questions. I highly recommend this book for all heart warriors!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2013Our five year old daughter had heart surgery two months ago. To help prepare her, we got this book. We found it a helpful tool as she learned that she would have permanent scar. It helped us to explain that while it was going to be visually significant when her chest was exposed, it would not change who she is. She appreciated the bunny rabbit who is friends with the girl and helps her to talk about it in the narrative. The illustrations that depicted the surgery were age-appropriate (there's a curtain with some medical equipment next to it). Even since the surgery this book has been a helpful tool to help her talk about what happened and how she feels.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2013This book is well written & very appropriate for little girls that are going through the same situation. My daughter's eyes just lit up while I read it to her & she realized that other children have the same zip line (or as we call it her beauty mark). Reading this book to her encouraged her to ask more questions about not only her scar but also the surgery she had & reasoning for the restrictions during her recovery. So glad I found this book prior to surgery, I read it to her the day her dressing came off her incision!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2018I just want to thank the author for writing this book. My daughter had open heart surgery in March of this year. This book has been very helpful. If helped her before the surgery with knowing what to expect and after the surgery coping with having a line scar. For her kindergarten book parade she chose this book and i am so happy that she is embracing her scar. I highly recommend this book for children who will or have had open hear surgery.

Perfect book to introduce your little heart warrior to their “zipper.” It teaches them how to feel normal with their scar and how to talk to others about it. It has age appropriate illustrations and is very uplifting, encouraging them to be brave and that they can do anything.
shellymReviewed in the United Kingdom on November 6, 20125.0 out of 5 stars A great book
As a mum to Ella (3) who has her own zip line I thought this book was brilliant. It not only helps her to understand that she is special and to be proud of her line but is great to help other kids understand.
I had a tear in my eye reading this for the first time as most mums will, but the book is so positive you can't help but smile. Recommended to anyone who's been through something similar and great for friends and family too.

My little girl has had 3 open heart surgeries and is now 4 yr old. She started to become a lot more aware of her scares so I started to research and came across this book. I am so thankful for it! It's an informative, rhyming, sweet book that touches on the curiosity of children when they see something unfamiliar! We will be bringing it into her JK class for her teacher to read :)
GeordieGirlReviewed in the United Kingdom on April 24, 20175.0 out of 5 stars A lovely book
A lovely, well written book which will help my little boy understand what he has been through as a baby. Language is simple and illustrations are subtle. I have to admit to having a lump in my throat the first time I read it. We have also bought some to donate to our children's heart unit to help other children to understand
