Editorial Reviews

EODM (Eagles of Death Metal) aka Jesse Hughes ('Boots Electric') and Joshua Homme ('Baby Duck'), are back with their first new album in seven years, ZIPPER DOWN! Available worldwide on October 2, ZIPPER DOWN features 11 tracks, including the hot lead single, 'Complexity.' Recorded at Pink Duck Studios in Burbank, California, Hughes and Homme co-wrote all of the album's songs (with the exception of their cover of Duran Duran's 'Save A Prayer'), and performed all of the instruments and vocals themselves. The album is produced by Homme.

'The new album, ZIPPER DOWN, really represents to me an attitude and philosophy of life,' says Hughes. 'One should not zipper up, they should zipper down and let it all hang out.' Homme says, 'In an independent study, four out of three doctors say ZIPPER DOWN is an eargasm trapped inside a crazerbeam. And I believe them.' EODM was formed in 1998 in Palm Desert, California by best friends Jesse Hughes and Joshua Homme. Despite their band name, EODM (Eagles Of Death Metal) is not a death metal band. The story goes that a friend was introducing Joshua Homme to the death metal genre, and Homme wondered what a cross between the Eagles and a death metal band would sound like. With that, EODM was born. The band released Peace Love Death Metal in 2004, followed by Death By Sexy in 2006, and Heart On in 2008.

Great album. Only complaint is there are only 6 new songs. The lead single "Complexity" as well as 2 other tracks are covers of Jesse Hughes songs from his Boots Electric album Honky Kong. The remakes are cool. Lots of guitar where the originals are more keyboard orientated. I like the pop feel of the Boots versions more though. "Oh Girl" is way more hooky and the vocals of "and I don't know why" are not stepped on like they are on this version. There is also a cover of Duran Duran's "Save a Prayer". Of course EODM would be fans of Duran Duran. Makes perfect sense. Track 8 is a reprise. That leaves 6 new songs. On Silverlake the self mockery is phenomenal. "The Reverend" may be the best track on the album. "The Duece" is stripped down and sleazy. "Skin Tight Boogie" sounds like a track left from Them Crooked Vultures. Slow and heavy. "Got a Woman" is pure power punk. "Got the Power" has a great 70's vibe to it. Sounds very Boots Electric. I like the album. I have had it on repeat play all day. I just wish after a 7 year hiatus there were more original tracks.
BTW:
If you are a fan and you have not heard Honky Kong I would highly recommend it to hear the original versions of the tracks here.

Best dance rock. Period. I can only imagine how fun a live concert would be.

4 Stars after the first 7-8 listens. Previous EODM albums have been slow growers for me, so I fully expect that I'll return and bump this up to 5 stars in the future. With a lot of the work that Josh Homme is involved with, the riffs and hooks catch my interest, the complexity within the simplicity is slowly revealed over time, and then the genius of the lyrics (QOTSA and TCV) charges the albums with greater meaning after every listen. To be fair, I'm not certain that EODM lyrics were ever designed to crack the "genius barrier," though the songs make up for that potential short-coming by first-listen danceability, and 100th listen danceability, and 1000th listen danceability . . . all with tongue planted firmly in cheek.

Highlights so far for me: "Silverlake" (even if I feel like I'm not quite in on the inside joke); "Skin Tight Boogie" and "The Deuce" for hip-shaking; "Save a Prayer" simultaneously builds relevance for both Duran Duran and EODM, and might draw some younger listeners back to 80s rock.

I LOVE the f'in Eagles Of Death Metal, man. Been following them since (Peace Love Death Metal) and they consistently deliver great, catchy tunes wrapped up in healthy doses of snark and humor and attitude - this latest release is no exception. They have a way with riffs and beats that makes each song feel instantly familiar, and if their music doesn't set your body moving, you might be dead or next to it. Silverlake is my hands (or zipper?) down favorite track -- if you're going to get an earworm, it's not a bad one to catch (and once I paid closer attention to the lyrics and found out what K.S.O.F.M. stands for, I just loved the tune and the EODM all the more). The rest of the album is pretty decent, with Skin-Tight Boogie and Complexity among the more memorable tracks for me. Not sure what the thinking was behind the Save A Prayer cover -- seems a little weird, but I can't say I hate it.

I was stunned to hear during live and breaking reports of the Paris terrorist attacks that EODM were playing at a theater (the Bataclan) that was among the targets, and was later relieved to learn that none of them was physically harmed. They were no doubt deeply affected emotionally, though, and it will be interesting to see how this affects their music in the future. Peace and Love to all of the them and the rest of those impacted as they recover from the horror.

While the album is not my favorite, it certainly displays a lot more of Josh's talent which is definitely a good thing in my opinion. But my review is mainly about the autographed copy, which is amazing and exactly as expected, well above expectations actually, and absolutely beautiful.
A warning to others planning on opening theirs like I did mine (I'm a fan, not a re-saler/collector!): the ink (the autographs!) smears!

i bought this the day it was released and immediately put it in the cd player in my car. months later, i still haven't taken it out. it just plays on a loop and i have a 40 minute commute to work. so i end up listening to it beginning to end about 3 times a day. that's how good it is.

As far as the album goes, not really that impressed. The first couple had something... the last few seemonths rushed or just not as inspired to me. I love Jesse and Josh but step it up.
The Paris attacks were horrible and I'm sorry for all the trauma and loss, but make the next album better.
I'm just glad I got the limited ed. signed cd.

Easily their biggest snoozer. Superfans will already have some songs here from the Boots Electric album. It's not without good material, but it's a bit more by-the-numbers than we're used to.

If you're looking for an EODM album to start with, I highly recommend waiting on this one and trying Heart On.
